Mr. Steele was my teacher at Sperling Avenue Elementary in 1966. I still have my report card in which he complimented me for my excellent penmanship. I was a mischievous child and was thrilled when he promoted me to Grade 7. There was a piano in his classroom and one occasion after school I was coming down the hallway and heard him playing. Unbeknownst to him, I listened in the open doorway for several minutes. As young as I was, I appreciated the music. My sincere condolences to his family.

Mr. Steele was the librarian at Gilmore Elementary. He read to us, taught us how to appreciate books, helped us with book reports...He touched so many children in his teaching career. Every Remembrance day assembly he was dressed in his uniform displaying all his metals. He showed us dignity, honour and love for our country. We also saw Mr. Steele cooking up a fine barbecue at the Royal Legion every year. Mr. Steele created a whole new world of words, the art of writing, the art of reading (in our hearts) How grateful I am of these times. My son had to write a speech about Remembrance Day in 2015. This is his speech:
My mother's first experience with Remembrance Day.
Her first Remembrance assembly was when she was seven years old. This happened during elementary school. The librarian's name is Mr. John Steele. He is a quiet man. He played the piano and dressed in his uniform from World War 2. There were many colorful metals on his uniform. He spoke about World War 2 and the importance of peace.
Final thought: Mr. Steele was a very kind and fine human being. I am forever grateful to have known him.
