John Steinbacher Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 9, 2013.
John Anthony Steinbacher, Sr.,

70, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully at home on August 8, 2013 with his family at his side.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday August 17, at 12 pm (noon) in St. Pius X Catholic Church, Indianapolis. Visitation will begin at 10 until service time in St. Pius.

John was born January 11, 1943 in Williamsport, Pa., the son of Matthew H. and Mary E. (Tierney) Steinbacher.

He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Peggy Steinbacher and his seven children: Debbie Tebrock, Michele Steinbacher, Kemp (Julie) Shafer, Matthew (Jennifer) Shafer, Allison (Darin) Orvis, John (Katy Heath) Steinbacher, Jr. and Meg (Jason) Graves. Also surviving are his brother Pat (Pauline) Steinbacher and three sisters: Juliann (Don) Mull, Mary (James) Lawton and Kathleen (Bob) Ulrich; 15 grandchildren and 17 nieces and nephews. His parents and one brother, Francis J. Steinbacher, preceded him in death.

John was a U.S. Army veteran. He earned his bachelor's degree in philosophy and his MBA from St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, Md. A longtime resident of Indianapolis, John spent his career as a human resources director. In his retirement years, Peggy and he loved to help at Our Lady of Fatima Retreat House.

John's greatest joy in life was spending time with his family. He treasured his role as husband, father and grandfather and especially loved his large family's annual "Septemblender." In his free time, he loved playing golf, fishing, boating and time on the beach.

John was devoted to his Catholic faith and was a lay director of the first Christ Renews His Parish group at St. Pius.

His family wishes to thank Dr. Charles Hasbrook and his staff, Pam and Becky from St. Vincent's Home Care and all his doctors and staff at St. Vincent Cancer Center.

Flowers are welcome or contributions may be made in John's name to Our Lady of Fatima Retreat House, Indianapolis. Services entrusted to Feeney-Hornak Keystone Mortuary. Memorial tributes may be offered at www.feeneyhornakkeystone.com

John the philosophy major used to tell his co-workers in Kankakee the allegory of Plato's cave. When the engineers he worked with gave him a puzzled look, he'd go on to explain the meaning and make his point.

I remember his three red-headed daughters and young son John from those long ago days. My thoughts are with them now.
