john strucker Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 8, 2022.
JOHN DONALD STRUCKER passed away suddenly at his home on May 31, 2022. He was born in 1945 in Orange, NJ, to educators Margaret Trimble and John F. Strucker.
From an early age, John had a deep curiosity about the world around him. At age two he wanted to go to school, so his mother gave him school books and a lunchbox and let him pretend he was boarding the school bus. At age five or six, he snuck off on his own to collect arrowheads in the woods near his home - and never forgave his mother for giving those treasures away after he went off to college. He brought home all manner of creatures from the wild but always released them. He fondly recalled the many nights he and his father spent watching Sid Caesar's "The Show of Shows" on a small black and white TV, and he would fall off the couch laughing.
John was a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War, participated in the civil rights movement, and fought for social justice causes throughout his life. After earning a degree in Social Studies from Harvard College in 1966, he enrolled at the University of Chicago but soon found himself expelled due to anti-war activities - an outcome he viewed as a badge of honor. For more than a decade after, he worked as a screw machine operator and a labor organizer in an auto parts factory, and was highly active in the racial equity movement.
In 1983, John returned to Cambridge with his young family to pursue a Master's in Education and later a Doctorate in Education, both from Harvard's Graduate School of Education (HGSE). He would spend the next forty years working in and contributing to the field of adult literacy, which he saw as a powerful tool in the fight against generational poverty. He directed research studies on adult education at the National Center for the Study of Adult Literacy and Learning, and worked on numerous literacy projects for several organizations including World Education, the National Academy of Sciences, the National Institute for Literacy, and education departments in eight states. At age 77, he was collaborating on the design of online courses for adult learners and consulting to developing nations on how to increase literacy for underserved and marginalized populations. Colleagues in the education space affectionately referred to him as the "Mister Rogers of the Reading Neighborhood."
John had recently joined the Worthington Conservation Commission and Native Fish Coalition, Massachusetts chapter, advocating for the restoration of native fish and their habitats.
John was happiest when spending time with family and was delighted that his children and grandchildren shared his compassion for and curiosity about the natural world. He was an avid fly fisherman and a talented fly tier. .
John was easy-going and fun to talk to. He could talk knowledgeably about almost anything, from World history to 1970's TV actors. He loved preparing hearty meals for friends and family, especially Italian dishes . When you entered his home you were greeted by a big warm "Hellooooow!" followed by, "Are you hungry? Can I get you something to drink?"
John was a kind, compassionate and principled man. He defended his liberal views with his encyclopedic knowledge, and bristled at the term "radical left" because he believed that social justice isn't radical or political, it's just right.
John's memory lives on through his beloved wife Brenda Shanley of Portsmouth, NH; his brother Lee Strucker and partner Diana Erikson of Seattle, WA; daughter Maeve Clifford and partner Josh of Solana Beach, CA; daughter Margo Strucker and partner Christopher Shaikh of Medford, MA; daughter Nadja Agnew and partner Jordan of Washington, DC; his beloved grandchildren Max, Isabel, and Calvin; his nephew Miles Strucker of Brooklyn, NY; his former wife Krista Bolt of Medford, MA; his cousins James Trimble and Gwen Campanelli of NJ; Richard Strucker of PA; his in-laws James Shanley, Karen Battles, Mary Jane and Thomas Keane of NH and Michael Shanley of SC.
John's family will honor him at a private service. John cared deeply about literacy and the need to preserve and protect the planet for future generations. If friends desire, donations made be made to one of the following organizations:

So sad to hear this news. John was a warm and encouraging teacher. He was a member of my dissertation committee, always a source of encouragement and guidance. He will always be a part of my memories of learning and teaching in the little blue house on campus... my deepest condolences to John's family.

John is one of the legends of adult literacy research. I am shaken by the news. I am upset that I will no longer be able to influenced by his joyful demeanor, voice of reason, and volumes of wisdom. I cannot believe that he will no longer be one of my "go to's" when I have a pressing question. His dedication to adult learners, sound research, and belief in the future of the field will always be remembered by me. Although he is "physically" gone, his impact on me and others will continue to be felt.

So sorry to hear of John's loss. He was a brilliant man who was always willing to help others. It reminds us that life is fragile, and we need to make the most of it. Thanks John for your positive influence on my life.

I had the privilege of attending Trenton High with John. Last memory was in 1962 when we played touch football in Harvard Yard after the Dartmouth- Harvard football game. May John rest in peace.

l had the distinct privilege of developing my reading teaching strategies as an adult educator by being able to work with Dr. Strucker over three years time. The knowledge that I gained and the passion that more fully developed for the struggling adult learner over those years transformed my life and the lives of the staff and students with whom I engaged. Dr. Strucker is one of my favorite teachers and I speak of him often. His loss is a loss for mankind. Rest in peace dear sir. You will always be remembered.

I met John years ago, not long after I became the director of a small nonprofit. My staff and I participated in a reading impact study led by John. He was a true gentleman, speaking from the heart and his passion for education was tangible. The world of adult ed was fortunate to have him and the world lost a true light in this world. May wonderful memories support his family during this time.

I took many trainings with John, cited his work in funding proposals, and used his research and his writings on a daily basis in my program. I was always impressed with his gentle, humble way of speaking and his boundless generosity to those of us working in adult basic education. He always made time to answer questions. He had a gift for making others feel as though their questions or concerns were the most important thing in the world to him. He was a great scholar and an even greater person. I will miss him.

John was one of the kindest, passionate and accessible leaders that adult basic education had. While I am saddened to hear of his passing, there is no doubt that he shines on in the educators he has impacted and in their learners who are better readers because of his work. That is a phenomenal legacy. Godspeed, John, in your next chapter.

I met John many years ago when I was a new teacher. I took his course on fundamentals of reading strategies for adult learners. I learned teaching strategies that I still use today, but more importantly I studied his humility, patience and calm demeanor. Being a teacher brought out the best in his personality, and he brought out the best in his students, including me. He was truly a teacher to the last breath.

I can't believe that John is gone. He was a dear friend and colleague who transformed the field of adult basic education through his research, and affected the lives of so many adult learners through his teaching. I had the great pleasure of welcoming his as a volunteer in my beginning reading class at the Community Learning Center, and then working with him as colleagues there in a program for adult learners on public assistance who were dealing with learning disabilities. As part of the curriculum he wrote a series of jokes at a beginning level at a time when most material for adult learners was dreadfully boring. He had a lovely sense of humor, and great loyalty to his colleagues and students. I treasure having known him, and send my deep sympathy to Brenda and his daughters.

My prayers and heartfelt sympathy are with you for John's sudden passing. May he rest in God's peace. He was so interested in our adult learners at Notre Dame Education Center and helped with the reading classes.

When I was a new teacher many years ago, I had the privilege of taking John's course on the fundamentals of teaching reading to adults. Not only did I gain tools for teaching reading which I still use today, but I studied his calm, patient demeanor. It was obvious that teaching brought out the best aspects of John's personality, and he brought out the best in his students, including me. He was a teacher to the last breath.

My condolences to all - having met John once, over a meal, over a river (and a few trout), conversation and a couple glasses of wine, it wasn't hard to see his confidence and goodness - may his memory be eternal, and bring you all comfort.
