John Sullivan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 29 to Sep. 7, 2014.
Sullivan, John L. Jr.

John L. Sullivan, Jr., 82, with his dazzling smile, sparkling blue eyes, charm and quick wit, peacefully left this world on August 8, 2014, at his home in Richardson, Texas with family at his side. Born May 26, 1932 to John L. and Louise O'Neill Sullivan, John was the second of four children and raised in Elmira, New York. He attended St. Peter & Paul's Elementary School, graduated from Cheshire Academy, Cheshire, Connecticut, and served honorably in the United States Air Force. Following his USAF duty, John's passion for aviation led him to his career in Air Traffic Control. In 1977, during a visit home to Elmira, he reconnected with his high school friend, Polly Dalrymple, beginning their 37-year relationship. They married in 1979 and moved to Dallas where both established successful real estate careers with Merrill Lynch and Prudential Texas Properties. His family and friends know well that John had a deep love for his Catholic faith, family and the Sullivan family restaurant, Hilltop Inn. They also know his love for Polly, swing dancing, jazz and travel, led to fun and laughter, and sometimes mischief. John was preceded in death by his parents, John L. and Louise Sullivan; sister, Natalie Sullivan, of Dallas; and brother Robert (Bob) Sullivan of Elmira, N.Y. He is survived by his wife, Polly; daughter Kim Fonseca (Peter) of Skillman, New, Jersey; grandchildren, Spencer and Nicholl Malunow (and their family); P.J. and Jillian Fonseca; brother and sister-in-law, G. Dennis and Beverly Sullivan, Dallas, (Patty Sullivan, Mark Sullivan, Molly Sullivan Vaudry and their families); sister in-law, Marilynn Sullivan, Elmira, N.Y. (Kevin, John Dennis, Michael and Tim, and their families); Melanie Dalrymple McDonald (Morgan McDonald), Plano, Texas; Mark and Diane Dalrymple (Mark and Stacie Ann Dalrymple), Elmira, N.Y.; and Scott Dalrymple, Auburn, N.Y. A Memorial Mass will be said on Saturday, September 27, 2014, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 720 S. Floyd Rd, Richardson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St Paul's School or the American Heart Association. The family would also like to extend its heartfelt thanks to Altus Hospice Care and Visiting Angels for their loving and tender care given to John and his family.

Polly and John lived across the street from my parents for many years. I have so many great memories; their neighborhood gatherings, John's crazy plaid Holiday pants, the warmth of their hospitality, the lifetime of exciting stories of travel and Air Force adventures -- all related with John's great sense of humor. Polly and John's zest for life and love for each other is an inspiration. He will be long remembered.

John's sister Natalie worked for my father in Dallas. She was a fun lady to be around and spent many hours at our home. John came over, too. Loved it when John Tower went swimming after a long day of partying. I was fortunate to know so many Elmira Sullivan's.
