JOHN WEISS Obituary

John Joseph Weiss, 90, Olathe, Kan., passed away peacefully on November 8, 2016, surrounded by the love of his family. Jack was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. Jack was born March 19, 1926, in Teaneck, New Jersey. He grew up in upstate New York and was a World War II Navy Veteran. Jack married the love of his life Marie Maggio Weiss in Cairo, New York, on Dec. 14, 1947. Jack and Marie have four children who all reside in the Kansas City area. His family was what Jack treasured most and he was a devoted and loving father. He was a steady presence in the life of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and he always had his camera ready to capture the moments of his family's life. He was a devout Catholic, outdoor enthusiast, loyal sports fan, photographer, and he loved travel and adventure. He and Marie enjoyed their annual trips to Arizona and he enjoyed fishing trips with his son and grandsons. Healthy and active nearly to the end, he celebrated his 70th birthday behind the wheel of a NASCAR race car, his 75th birthday by hiking in and out of the Grand Canyon and his 80th birthday by skydiving. He enjoyed our annual 4th of July family reunions at the lake and water-skied into his 80s. Jack retired from The Coca- Cola Company as a National Account Manager and he was well known in the food service industry where he was respected as a man of integrity and honesty. He was a humble, unassuming and genuine gentleman. Jack will be best remembered for how he lifted the spirits of those who knew him - his family, colleagues, customers, and even perfect strangers. He treated everyone he encountered with deliberate thought, purpose, kindness and respect. It was no wonder that you found yourself at ease and instantly comforted by his radiant warmth and spirit. Jack was preceded in death by parents, Michael J. and Kathryn Weiss; sister, Norma Bondy; and son-in-law, Frank Fontana. Jack is survived by his wife, Marie M. Weiss and their four children, Stephen J. Weiss (wife, Dr. Laura McMurray), Susan M. Highberger, Judy A. Weiss and Jennifer L. Fontana. "Papa Jack" was loved and adored by his 10 grandchildren, Emily, Victor, Sammie, Frankki, Tony, Nikki, Michael, Kelley, Matthew, Roy and he was blessed with nine great grandsons, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Sunday, Nov. 13, at McGilley State Line Chapel, 12301 State Line Road, Kansas City, Mo. The rosary will be said at 4 p.m. followed by visitation until 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 14, at Church of the Ascension, 9510 W. 127th St., Overland Park, Kan. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to National Parkinson's Foundation of the Heartland, 8900 State Line Road, #320, Leawood, KS 66206 or Kansas City Hospice House, 12000 Wornall Road, Kansas City, MO 64145. Jack's smile and eyes told it all...engaging, happy, real, sincere & genuine. What a nice man. He loved his family with all his heart and they loved him with all their hearts. You could feel this love when gathering with Jack, Marie and family.

I did secretarial work for Jack many years ago and he was one of the nicest men ever. Have missed seeing him at Ascension and saw he was on the parish prayer list. So sorry for your loss. He loved Marie with all his heart. It was very evident whenever we visited and he was so happy to celebrate 50 years with her!
