John Carroll Whitaker, born December 29, 1926, died on June 12, 2016 in Chevy Chase, MD at the age of 89. Mr. Whitaker was a former domestic policy aide to President Richard Nixon. He was born in Victoria, British Columbia, attended Loyola High School in Baltimore, MD, graduated from Georgetown University in 1949, and received his Ph.D. in geology from Johns Hopkins University in 1953. He first worked in field geology and airborne geophysical surveys, becoming vice-president of the International Aero Service Corporation. He then began doing part-time advance work for Richard Nixon. He served an advance man in Nixon's 1960 presidential campaign and coordinated Nixon's schedule in the 1968 presidential campaign. He joined the Nixon White House staff, first as cabinet secretary and then as a Deputy Assistant for Domestic Affairs, where he coordinated White House policy initiatives on the environment, energy and natural resources. He later served as Under Secretary of Interior under Presidents Nixon and Ford. Following government service, he was vice president of Union Camp Corporation, was an advisor on President Reagan's commission on Americans Outdoors, and served as the first executive director of the Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace. Upon his retirement Whitaker was chairman of the board of Rebuilding Together, a national non-profit organization, which repairs homes for low-income elderly citizens. He also volunteered serving the sick and elderly at the Gift of Peace House run by the Missionaries of Charity in Washington, DC.

His wife of 43 years, the former Mary Elizabeth Bradley, died in 2001. Survivors include his five sons, John Clifford of Cincinnati, OH, Robert Carroll of Philadelphia, PA, Stephen Bradley of San Luis Obispo, CA, William Burns of Kensington, MD, and James Ford of Pacific Palisades, CA, along with fourteen grandchildren.

Whitaker Family.I always enjoyed talking with John and normally Bill when they arrived on the ferry in Yarmouth NS. I certainly recall the Whitaker family when they resided in Yarmouth. John was always very friendly, and asked how my parents were doing. He remembered them by name which always amazed me after so many years living away from Yarmouth. I know John very much appreciated the trips to Brazil Lake with Bill and other family members. And I always enjoyed the conversation with John upon is arrivals in Yarmouth. My thoughts and prayers are with the Whitaker family. John will be missed.

My deepest sympathies for your loss. I'm glad I had the opportunity to get to know John and all of you over the last three years during my time at Lake Annis. I enjoyed listening to him talk about his time at Interior and interactions with my current Department, USDA, at the time. Public service in the land management agencies was something we had in common. My prayers and thoughts are with you all.

Our condolences in the loss of your wonderful dad. He was a great neighbour and friend. We enjoyed many chats with him when he was in our village, the last time over a cup of coffee in his kitchen at the cottage last summer. Love and prayers at this sad time. We will miss him. God Bless.

We were saddened to hear of John's passing and offer our sincere sympathy to his family.

John was a dear friend of ours for years and a neighbor in the Nova Scotian village we shared in summer. We remember fondly our evenings together discussing politics, current events, and books, sipping adult beverages as a cozy fire burned and crackled in the fireplace. Even though we rarely agreed on politics (he was a Republican, we are Democrats), we always ended the night with a laugh and a cheery good night, John adding God Bless, a twinkle in his blue eyes.

John often hosted dinner parties for various village residents. We could always plan on salmon or chicken, the table set with fresh flowers from his yard. On warm nights, we took our lively conversations outdoors, sitting around a fire and gazing up at star-filled skies.

One vivid memory, our trip with John and four others down the Mississippi to New Orleans. We called ourselves The Magnificent Seven and we were.

What an amazing life he had. Bill and I remember so well our conversations with your Dad at Hillary and Bob's rehearsal dinner. He told us stories that I continue to tell in my class at Emory. One of the most interesting people that I have ever had the privilege of meeting and conversing. Our thoughts are with you.
