Johnny Oates was one of the nicest people I have ever known. We met Johnny and his family in Placentia CA back in 1978 when we moved there from suburban Philadelphia. Johnny had been traded to the Dodgers from the Phillies and when we met we had a lot to share since I was a lifetime Phillies fan. Small world story - it turned out that they had rented their home in Havertown PA from friends of mine. For the year we lived in the same association Johnny set up tickets at Dodger Stadium for us whenever we wanted to go. My then teenage daughter Lisa babysat for the Oates children. Wonderful memories of Johnny and his family. I followed his career on with the Orioles and Rangers and once called him to ask him if he could set up tickets for one of my younger brothers who lived there in Arlington. So sad to learn these many years back about his courageous struggle with the tumor and his eventual death.
Very sincerely, God bless, Everett Sanborn, February 2019, Prescott Arizona

Mr. Oates was a great manager and a great person. He was a person you would want to lead your life after you could tell that just by the way he carried himself. I just completed an essay for my management class about great leaders and I thought who else would be a better example than Mr. Oates. We miss you

I was saddened to hear that Mr. Oates passed away after his long fight with cancer. Mr. Oates has always been a favorite of mine since I met him when his family lived in NJ. Lori and I were in the same elementary class and I remember having fun times with her until she moved. Her family introduced me to baseball which years later I came to appreciate, thank you.

Our thoughts & prayers are with you. My father was a big fan now they are both sitting up there discussing baseball. We wish him a happy b-day today & I'm sure he's smiling from ear to ear. I had the opportunity to meet him & his lovely wife Gloria along with some of the coaching staff a few years back when I coached in Dallas at a baseball camp where our kids played at the "Johnny Oates Field" & Mr. Oates signed my first mit that I used when I started playing.Thanks for all the great memories.

As a little girl from Texas I grew up watching the Rangers play. My daddy would take me to the games and explaine the rules. I remember going to the special events and getting to meet Mr Oates, he is a man I will always group with the greatest of baseball players.

Thank you Johnny Oates for helping me see what a great Baseball team consists of.

As usual I am behind the times and just learned of Mr. Oates passing, I am an avid sports fan and in reflection it seems that God will have some quality people not just players on his squad, Im reminded of Dick Howzer, Dan Quisenberry, Tug McGraw, all fine people not just baseball men, I think God places these people in the major leagues to give those of us whom are tired of the "egos" in the majors, a desire to still watch the game!

I guess that because we shared the same last name, whenever I saw an article in the sports section on Johnny, I would read it with interest. Over the years I have been quite impressed with how he managed baseball teams with the utmost of class and style. My sincere condolences to you and your family at this time. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

There are many people in Rochester with wonderful memories of Johnny, and Gloria, and the children. I remember seeing Johnny and Gloria's picture in the paper with Lori as a newborn when she was born here. I was saddened by the diagnosis, but knew that God had something special for Johnny to do, and he surely did do it judging by all the loving comments.

Please accept my condolences and find comfort in all the love and memories so many of us have of a great guy!

From the time we were together in Chicago, sharing good times and bad, our talks about the Hokie days, our spiritual journeys together, though our conversations this summer, I have allways felt blessed to have been his friend. He survived a seemingly impossible profession unscathed spiritualy. He served as an inspiration to countless people in all walks of life, just by being himself. He touched me greatly, and I'll forever have a special place in my heart for Johnny. Rest peacefully, sir.

Johnny:

It was a pleasure to meet you during your tenure as manager of the Baltimore Orioles and Texas Rangers and to talk about the mutual friends that we had outside of baseball.

Thanks once again for all of your kindness.

May you rest in peace.

It's fitting that I should write in Johnny's guest book in that I was Johnny's very best friend in the whole world. Dear reader,before you get excited, I actually know that each of you reading this know in your own heart that You have been Johnny's best friend since the day you met him. That's a wonderful piece of the genius of God in His making Johnny so special and loving to each of God's children. I'd like to write for hours about Johnny's great capicity for understanding people and his love for all. Truly one of God's best examples of a really, really GOOD man! Glo, Lori, Andy, & Jenny; thank you so very much, for sharing Johnny. We love you! God Bless!

The name Johnny Oates is etched deep in my memory bank. I competed with Johnny in high school & followed him during his playing days at American Legion Post 284. Later, it was a thrill to see him suit up as a player, and later a manager in the major leagues. Southside Virginians will always have a warm place in their heart for Johnny Oates. Johnny will be remembered for his character, humility, and his love for Jesus Christ. God Bless the Oates family.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Johnny Oates. I never met Johnny personally, but I worked with his brother Eddy for several years. From all I have read, Johnny was just as much of a gentleman as his brother. Mrs Oates you should be very proud to have two fine sons. I'm sure that all fans of Major League Baseball as well as the members of the Hokie Nation know that we have lost one of the most decent men in all of sports. To Gloria, Eddy, Mrs. Oates and the rest of the family I send my deepest sympathy and my warmest prayers.

I have been all over the internet reading about Johnny Oates. Clearly, he was well respected by those that knew him from his affiliation to baseball. But, I knew him as a neighbor. I knew him as a devoted Christian and family man who lived across the street. I watched him with is wife raise a family of three children. I am sure he struggled with being away so much due to his career in baseball, but he made up for it when he was home and by setting a good example for them to live by. What a model and great example to be followed.

Most anyone will put on their best face when in public or in front of a camera, but Johnny did not have another side. He was the same fine person all the time. He would speak about his faith with two or two hundred. It was that important to him and that much a part of his life.

In baseball, he had his wins and losses. They are posted on scorecards. In life, with his church and when speaking about his faith he hit a home run every time. Just good folks that you cross paths with and never forget.

May God bless his family with their loss.

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound

That saved a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found;

Was blind, but now I see.

’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,

And grace my fears relieved;

How precious did that grace appear

The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares,

I have already come;

’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,

And grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me,

His Word my hope secures;

He will my Shield and Portion be,

As long as life endures.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,

And mortal life shall cease,

I shall possess, within the veil,

A life of joy and peace.

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,

The sun forbear to shine;

But God, Who called me here below,

Shall be forever mine.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,

Bright shining as the sun,

We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise

Than when we’d first begun.

My sympathy to the Oates family. I lost my dad nearly 3 years ago this month. He passed away from cancer and it was tough dealing with it since it was the holidays. Even though you prepare and expect the final result, it still tears you up inside. My dad lived almost 3 years after his initial diagnosis. The end is always a weird feeling. You feel relief the pain is finally over but a sense of loss over the passing. The holidays make it even more difficult to deal with. My prayers go out to your entire family and I hope you find some comfort in knowing that Mr. Oates suffering is finally over and that he is in a better place.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Oates family. My husband was an avid Baltimore Orioles fan, growing up in the area and attending opening day of the first season at both Memorial and Camden. He had taken two pictures of Johnny on fan picture day and at a later game, gave them to the bat boy and asked that Johnny autograph them. One was for our son and the other our cousins. A few days later, we received a phone call: "Hi, This is John Oates. We are in a rain delay and I have these pictures to autograph but I need to know which to autograph to who. After my husband recovered from the shock. they talked for a few minutes. After that, our favorite team was the Orioles and the

My condolences to the Oates family. I followed the Baltimore Orioles back in the 1970's and remembered when Johnny played the catcher position on the team. I also remembered when he briefly managed the team in the early 1990's. A fellow retired employee in my agency also suffered the same type of brain cancer that Johnny was diagnosed with. Johnny was always an easy going type of guy who will be missed.

I will always remember his bright smile, his words of encouragement and his positive outlook on life. I've encountered thousands of people in my 30 plus years of baseball, but Johnny Oates will always have a special place in my fondest memories

Rest in peace Johnny and enjoy the rewards you'll receive for the short life you led on earth and the examples that you set.
