Jon Bowers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 20, 2025.
December 7, 1942 - February 12, 2025

Jon Dale Bowers, age 82, passed away on February 12, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of adventure, joy, and a commitment to Christ and family. Born on December 7, 1942 in Junction City, Oregon, Jon lived a vibrant and audacious life, shaped by his love of teaching, ministry, and his close-knit family.

Jon was the beloved husband of his high school sweetheart Lynna Gay Bowers, his bride for 61 wonderful years. He is survived by Lynna Gay and their three kids, Kim Mills (Levi) of North Richland Hills, TX, Todd Bowers (Jamie) of Colleyville, TX, and Ryan Bowers (Crissie) of Keller, TX, 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, as well as his brothers Jim (and Judy) of Tucson, AZ and Mark (and Marcia) of Sturgis, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Katherine Bowers.

Jon's life was marked by a deep love for adventure, risk, fun and an unfailing love for Jesus. He began his education at Wyatt Elementary School in Harrisburg before attending Harrisburg Union High School. He then attended Clark College for his associates degree, followed by a bachelor's and master's degree from Southern Oregon University. Jon's passion for education was reflected in his career as a teacher in Eugene. In addition to his teaching career, Jon worked on the family farm and eventually came into his lifelong calling as a pastor.

From a very young age, Jon had a passion for sharing the love of Jesus. Whether he was speaking to young Sunday school kids, or to a small group in the barn on his personal property, or to a congregation in Junction City (a ministry that stretched across the globe), Jon's mission was always to reach as many souls for the Kingdom as humanly possible. He had a gifting in this area and a sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. His mission, to share the love of God and help people receive a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, ran deeply in his veins. He led countless outreach trips all over the world, impacting many nations for Christ. But Jon didn't stop when he reached the far ends of the globe. In fact, his greatest assignment was his family. He wanted each of his family members to have a personal and real relationship with Jesus. His goal was to have a heavenly reunion with all of them one day.

Jon's assignment in life was important and impactful, but he made sure to have fun every step of the way. He had a fun factor about him that was contagious. Whether making up songs to pass the time on road trips, discovering "the best ever" restaurants, seeking adventure in the outdoors and travel, or enjoying his Oregon Ducks and Los Angeles Dodgers, Jon knew how to have a good time, and he imparted this lesson to his family beautifully.

We rejoice in knowing that Jon's life mission on this earth was carried out to the fullest, and that he is basking in the Glory of our Savior. Praise God!

Pastor Jon was an amazing man. My husband and I first came to Christ's Center church in Junction City, OR in 2007 My John and Pastor Jon became friends quickly, although the Lord called my husband John home on a bright July morning in 2009. Pastor Jon was so supportive to our family during that sad time in our lives. When I learned of Pastor Jon's going Home I told my son, "Just imagine the celebration in Heaven when Jon got there; and imagine your dad's joy at their reunion!"

Jon was the pastor I remember the most at Christ Center. God's word flowed through him and you just felt God's love every time he spoke. He made such an impact that even 30 years later I am reflecting on words he spoke and the example he was in the church. Thanks Jon for being such an inspiration and joy to be around. You will be missed.

Jon Bowers was my speech coach at Kennedy Jr. High in Eugene Oregon in the late 60's. An incredibly good man. So supportive. Saw good in me when plenty did not. Lost touch with Jon but he was always in my heart. Over 50 years and I love him like yesterday. No better legacy than a 13 year old kid still thanking you 56 years later. Enjoy your good seat at the big dinner table in the sky and say hi to Don & Judy Smith and Carl & Gloria Saylor. My best to your loved ones. Thank you Jon, Skip Saylor
