Jon Didrickson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 1, 2022.
Jon Carl Didrickson was born in Chicago, Illinois, on May 18, 1943, to Carl and Kathryn Didrickson. Growing up in Chicago, Jon attended St John's Lutheran School through the 8th grade and graduated from Mt Prospect High School in 1961. Jon studied Biology at Wheaton College, graduating in 1965. While at Wheaton he met his bride, Jana Filip, and they were married in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1966. Together they pursued Christian missionary service in Chicago and Newark and then spent 6 rewarding years in Nigeria with Sudan Interior Mission. Jon taught high school science at a mission compound in Kwoi and built deep and lasting friendships through inner city youth work in Lagos. Their first daughter was born during that time. After an internship with Youth for Christ in Walnut Creek, CA, their second daughter was born. They moved their young family to Port Angeles in 1975 and had 3 more children. Jon worked a variety of local jobs, most notably spending 15 years with Olympic National Park and 10 years with John L. Scott Real Estate.
Jon loved people, history, coins, stamps, trains, travel, and photography. He was also a community visionary and enjoyed connecting all his diverse interests through the creation of a variety of community events. His favorite endeavor was the "Port Angeles Olde Fashioned Thanksgiving" which he hosted at Lincoln Park for 10 years. Jon was most well-known for his love of the Lord and for people. He was generous, thoughtful, and kind and made friends easily, keeping in contact with people from all over the world.
Jon loved having many visitors, including his children, during his final days. He shared his faith and prayed with each one. Jon passed into heaven peacefully on September 2, 2022, after a 3-year battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Jana, five children (Shelley, Carla, Karen, Jan, and Joy) and 14 grandchildren. His brother, Luther, and his parents preceded him in death.
A memorial service and reception are planned for Sunday, November 20th at 2:30 pm at Dungeness Community Church.

Jon was part of my life for most of my life, since I was very young around 7 years old and into my thirties and he worked with my dad for a very long time washing windows. He and my dad were good friends and they would spend most mornings together at their favorite coffee shops. When I was young he would take me on trips with his family and he's the only person that ever did that for me. He also brought me food when I was very hungry and going to the thanksgiving dinner at lincoln park was some of my fondest memories of my life. I hope I someday have those types of memories again. But things like that just don't exist for me anymore, but I wish they did.
He visited my dad when my dad was dying of cancer and since then my dad has died and so hopefully if a heaven exists then they are their together helping each other be happy.
Jon was a very good man and I am very sorry that my family and I didn't get to say goodbye to him like he did for my father. I wish him and his whole family nothing but the best.

It's been said that you can count your good friends in life on one hand. When I count my life's good friends Jon is among those who I will always count on that hand. I will and I do miss you Jon and will till we meet again, just knowing that day will adds to that peace that passes all understanding. My best to Jana and family as they grow accustomed to Jon's absence. Jon was one of the most humble caring of others I've ever known in my life and someone I can say was truly a "Great" person!

Dear Jana,

We were so sad to hear that Jon's life on this earth is over. We rejoice that he is with the Lord, but grieve because we know he has left a huge vacancy in your life and the life of your children and grandchildren. We have such fond memories of your visit last year. We were so grateful we had that time with you as it was good to touch base again after so many years. Our prayers are with you. Love, Les and Verla
