Jon Frederick Lutz, 45, of Commerce City died suddenly in his sleep while on business in Changzhou, China on January 28th, 2015. Jon was born May 20, 1969 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was a graduate of Pomona High School in Arvada where he became an accomplished French hornist, later performing routinely with the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra for several years. He was a graduate of the University of Colorado with a BS in Electrical Engineering, followed by his Masters. During his collegiate years, Jon held part time positions with Micro Motion and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of Boulder. Following completion of his graduate studies in 1993, Jon was initially employed as Motor Development Engineer by Unique Mobility of Golden, Colorado, later renamed UQM Technologies, Longmont. UQM is a developer and manufacturer of power-dense, high-efficiency electric motors, generators and power electronic controllers for the commercial truck, bus, automotive, marine, military and industrial markets. He later held positions as Motor Group Manager and Motor Magnetics Design Engineer, Director of Engineering from 2007 to 2011, and finally Vice President of Technology on April 1, 2011. He developed several patents for UQM, most recently a unique rotor design that enables the use of less costly and more readily available non-rare earth magnets vs. rare earth material. In addition to his work with UQM, he regularly volunteered with the Birds of Prey Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation and release of injured and orphaned raptors, and was an avid photographer and raptor ornithologist. Jon is survived by his wife of 21 years, Andrea (Neiheisel) Lutz, parents Jim & Kay Lutz of Loveland, sister Maureen Lutz and brother in law Jim Haneberg of Fort Collins, mother and father in law Vana & Gene Neiheisel of Arvada, sister and brother in law Kevin & Jana (Neiheisel) Roush of Arvada, and numerous uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews. A memorial service will be held Monday, 1:00 PM , February 09 at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 9998 Grant Street, Thornton. Light reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Birds of Prey Foundation, 2290 S. 104th St, Broomfield, Colorado 80020 http://www.birds- of-prey.org

I will be riding a roller coaster of emotions for the next week or so just as I have been when I heard of his death. But after his memorial service, Jim and I went for a hike and I saw so many lovely things in nature and thought about how he loved nature. He wants us to continue on with our lives valuing everything in nature and in each other. I couldn't have asked for a better brother!

I volunteered with Jon as my leader on Saturday mornings. Jon's infectious smile and warm welcome always made me feel like I was a valued member of the team! His love for the raptors and knowledge of the differences between the species is something I will always aspire to, yet may never reach the level of knowledge he had. Andrea - my heart just breaks for your loss - I am so sorry! Jon will be missed!

I volunteered with Jon at Birds of Prey. He was always so nice and easy going and such a gentle spirit with the birds. I am shocked and so very, very sad that he is gone. My heartfelt condolences to his family. He will be very missed.

It is pretty rare that I look though the newspaper and more rare that I glance over the obituary. Today was a very sad day when I saw Jon's name in the obituary. Jon and I were friends at Pomona High School. We both graduated the same year. I remember Jon as being such a nice guy. I remember him playing the French horn and we both had similar interests in electrical engineering and computers. If I knew how to reach out to folks from the class of 87 I would do so as I am certain there are many that would like to pay their last respects. Rest in peace Jon.

Jon sure sounds like he led a sucessful life that contributed much to making all of our lives better and easier. His hard devoted time and work should be another excelent example to us all. Losing a child must be horific. But being able to look through the tears and devistation there will always be a bright ray of pride. God Bless Jon and Parents

I went to high school with Jon, always as his 2nd chair, no way I could compete with his horn prowess. He was brilliant, witty, and kind. Hearing of his passing makes the day darker. My most sincere sympathy.
