Jon Wickizer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 9, 2025.
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our son and brother Jon Matthew Wickizer, who died unexpectedly on January 29th in Superior, Colorado at the age of 51.

Jon was born April 19th, 1973 in Newbury Park, California to Wayne and Sheri Wickizer. He joined the Wickizer family as the adored, blonde, curly haired, youngest of four children, with two sisters, Lane (Wickizer) Antry and Michelle (Wickizer) Workman, and one brother, Nathan Wickizer.

Jon attended Woods Cross High School, graduating in 1991, and Utah State University, where he was an integral part of the Aggies men's basketball team, graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Community Health in 1996.

He is survived by his Father, Sisters, Brother, many nieces and nephews, and his wife Tera and their five children, Katelyn, Kennady, River, Kwincy, and Rock. He was preceded in death by his mother Sheri, who he adored and missed greatly.

Jon's passion for sports began at an early age, with soccer being his first love. He quickly earned the reputation as an exceptional goalie. He also studied and practiced the martial art of Karate. As he grew, basketball became his specialty. Following a standout high school career, he went on to play for four years at Utah State University. His successful college career was characterized by unmatched grit, determination, and hustle. Jon felt, though, that his success on the court was always secondary to the deep bonds he formed with his teammates, trainers, and coaches.

Jon brought this same dedication and drive to his career as a health and safety professional. His knowledge and passion were unmatched, leaving a lasting impact on thousands within the construction industry. As a skilled trainer, he earned deep respect from the men and women he worked alongside.

While Jon was passionate about his athletic and career pursuits, it was his family that he truly loved and adored. He was the best "cheer dad" ever, learning how to braid his daughter's hair for their big events. No matter when or where, Jon was always the biggest kid around. Be it spending time at Disneyland with his family or anywhere else, his heartwarming smile, infectious laugh, and good natured joking brought joy to everyone. He loved games (board, card, magic, video, etc), the great outdoors, hiking, backpacking, and camping with family and friends. He was an enthusiastic fly fisherman and well-known for his hand-made rods and expertise in tying flies.

Jon lived passionately, while battling with mental illness for many years. He put on a brave face for everyone around him, but tragically, in the end it took his life. We miss Jon and the light that he radiated through his contagious smile, laughter, and wit.

Sadly, despite anyone's best efforts, suicide is not always preventable and leaves behind deep heartbreak and unanswered questions. Understanding that solace can be found amid such deep pain and anguish, through our Savior Jesus Christ who "descended below all things" brings peace to each of us. We know that Jon will be well again and that we will be together with him one day.

There was a private service for Jon in Colorado. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness/NAMI at: https://www.nami.org/get-involved/donate-to-nami/ or the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at https://988lifeline.org/donate/.

My heart goes out to Tera and their family. I had the opportunity to have many heartfelt conversations with Jon as we worked together with Acknowlogy. I learned a lot from Jon and appreciated the time he spent to make me successful. He was a wonderful teacher.
His passion and care for others was amazing. He just wanted others to be successful and enjoy life.
I called him my brother and he was.
His light will burn brighter as he finds that which he lost in this life.
Rest well brother

Jon, you were my best friend and the greatest man I ever knew. I am so terribly saddened to hear about your passing! Not only did you give me the great gift of your friendship, you taught me to flyfish when we were just 18, going on hundreds of fishing and camping adventures together. I've passed this passion for flyfishing on to my son Drew and I will treasure every time we go together. I tell him stories about you all the time and all about the incredible adventures we used to share. Thank you for this incredible gift Jon! To Tera and your kids, I want you to know how incredibly sorry I am for your loss! Your Dad truly loved and helped so many people throughout his life! His smile, laugh and jokes were infectious. I will never know another Jon. I will miss you every day friend. I'm so sorry for losing touch these past years. My family will keep your family in our prayers always . I'll meet you on the river again one day! Like always, I will be admiring watching you reel in a giant brown! Love you always friend!

I grew up with Jon. Running around the neighborhood and getting into trouble with the Wickizer boys are some of my fondest memories growing up, from playing paintball around the old elementary school, to lighting fireworks in the middle of the night around the neighborhood.

Coming of Age is a special time in a man's life, and I feel priviledged to have spent those years with Jon and Nate.

My heart goes out to his family and friends in this time of loss. And I hope the happy memories of Jon and his mischievious smile will provide comfort.
