Dr. Joseph B. Addante; 90

FITCHBURG -- Dr. Joseph Bartholomew Addante, 90, died peacefully in the company of his family at HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital on March 6.

He was born in Fitchburg on August 25, 1926, son of Giuseppe and Annantonia (Berardi) Addante. He was the proud son of Italian immigrants, forever a home town boy and an ambassador for his profession. A true-blue Bernardian, he credited the Sisters of the Presentation with instilling in him the discipline and development of fundamental skills required for academic pursuits. This and his enduring curiosity enriched his long life. The following merely highlight some of the many things he did in his 90 years.

He served the US Army Air Corps Army of Occupation in Peiping, China in 1945. Grateful for the G.I. Bill and forever extolling its value for having provided the opportunity for education for a whole generation, he resumed his education at Fitchburg State and Temple University where he graduated from Chiropody School in 1953.

He returned to Fitchburg to practice and delighted in knowing networks of families and caring for patients across several generations. He was instrumental in the evolution of the profession of podiatry both politically and educationally. He was president of the Massachusetts Podiatric Medical Society, a member of the board of trustees of the American Podiatry Association, a member of the Council on Podiatry Education (the accrediting body for podiatry colleges) and a member of the board of trustees of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. He encouraged, trained, challenged and inspired many students, externs, and residents.

Joe was a lifelong member of the parish of St. Anthony of Padua and was engaged in many social and cultural institutions and events. Always ready for a party he was a member of the Fay Club for 50 years. He enjoyed many exhibitions and supported the Fitchburg Art Museum by membership. He joined the Exchange Club then Rotary Club, serving the community, recruiting members, and having fun! He served on the Fitchburg Board of Health for many terms. In recent years, he served on the board for the Center for Italian Culture where he was the unofficial local historian. Most recently, he volunteered at the Fitchburg Historical Society sharing local historical facts and colorful stories.

He enjoyed a wide range of interests, was a self-proclaimed news junkie, and held an opinion on virtually everything and was willing to share it. His life was fascinating and pleasurable with the company of an extraordinary group of people and cherished friendships. He missed many he loved but he often recounted the relationships, experiences and adventures of the past with gratitude.

He is survived by his daughter, Dr. Annelisa Addante and her husband, Rick Brown of Bolton; his grandson and namesake, Joseph B. Addante, III and his wife, Lauren of Quincy; his grandson, Ensign Maxwell Brown of Honolulu, HI; his loving sister, Rosaria Taft of Fairfield, CT; and his former daughters-in-law, Sylvia Banville of Westminster, and Anita Genco of NYC. There is also a small, but cherished circle of cousins, nieces, and nephews living here and in Italy.

He was predeceased by his wife and sweetheart, Alice (Baldarelli) Addante in 2015 after 63 years of marriage, and his beloved sons, Bart and Jay in 1997, and his supportive and inspirational sister, Mary in 1986.

The family wishes to thank the folks at The Gables for all of their assistance and the staff at Leominster Hospital for care of extraordinary compassion and kindness.

ADDANTE -- A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 11 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 84 Salem St., Fitchburg. Burial will be private. Calling hours will be held on Friday, March 10 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli and Fitchburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Homes, 243 Water St., Fitchburg, 978-345-4151. Contributions in Joe's memory may be made to: The Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 99 Church St., Leominster, MA 01453 or may be left at the funeral home.

Dr. Joe, as we called him, was a wonderful person who my family adored. He was very friendly with all of the Martorilli Family and a pleasure to have with us on many special occasions. It was amazing how he related to all four generations of our family. I was also fortunate to spend time with him in Rome and it was a very special time for me. I was just searching for his contact information and saw his obit. May he rest in peace; our love & sympathies go out to his family. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. Joyce "Martorilli" Flavin.

Dr Addante operated on my foot at the London Foot Hospital about 20 years ago.Such a brilliant surgeon and educator with a joy for life. We kept in touch and in 2004 my husband and I met him in Rome and we watched the England v Italy rugby match together. We then took the tram to a restaurant he liked but the conductor wouldn't let us board because we didn't have tickets. (It was a Sunday and the kiosk was closed.) When she wasn't looking Joe led us back onto the tram. He smiled like a kid and said it was more fun this way. We marvelled at his great faith in the Lord after the deaths of his sons. He loved his family and even though I never met any of them I feel privileged to have heard about them from him. I once asked him why he chose podiatry surgery and he said, "patients come to me in pain and after I've treated them they are no longer in pain." Even now this brings a tear to my eye. God bless the Addante family. You are all in my prayers.

Dr. Addante was there for me, actually holding my hand when I had surgery on my foot. He was training Dr. Mary Chin in surgical techniques. I will never forget how awesome he was making me feel so comfortable before and after. What a wonderful man he was. I am so sorry for your loss. Sue Woodcome

Joe's intelligence, compassion, humor and amazing knowledge of so many subjects made him an absolute delight to be around. Joe was a guest many times on Inside Fitchburg at FATV and the hour was full of fun, facts, laughs. Joe was a friend who was always there if you needed him. Joe would always say "Let's do another show on feet" and each time we did the subject inevitably bounced from feet to local stories, to world politics. He loved his family deeply and was so proud of them. We will miss him for his love, friendship and for his intelligence, a true 'one of kind' gem.

My father, Bill Thoms, considered Joe his life time dearest friend. He was so kind to my father when he was ill. I will always remember him fondly.

Joe was a close friend from boyhood of my husband ,Bill Thoms. Bill had many happy memories involving Joe and his parents and sisters .( Bill claimed he was an Italian through his association with the Addantes.) This friendship lasted for their lifetime. Joe and Alice were wonderful people who lived meaningful lives and left a legacy of good works that lives on. Love to Annalisa and the boys

To the Addante Family,

Dr. Addante was a next door neighbor of my Dad's at the Gables. There was never a dull moment for the residents and family members. He kept us all laughing with his wit and he told memorable stories. He could also speak the Greek language beautifully. May he rest in peace. He will be missed.

Deepest Sympathy,

I have never forgotten the vivacious Dr. Addante and how much of a sweetheart he was. Not only was I a patient of his at a very young age, I went on to work as an assistant to him in my teenage years. May he rest in peace with his beautiful Alice and sons and my condolences to his family as well.

What a beautiful remembrance and tribute to a truly remarkable man, husband, father, and Grandpa. Or hearts ache, yet rejoices that Joe is with his wife, Alice and his sons, Bart and Jay.

You are all in our thoughts and prayers forever.
