HIGH POINT — Joseph Rankin "DoDo" Allred, Jr., of 1749 Chestnut Glen Way, died Friday, August 29, 2008, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center from injuries received in a single car accident.
A memorial service to celebrate Joe's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2, in the sanctuary of Forest Hills Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Joe Blankinship officiating. Inurnment will be in Floral Garden Memorial Park Cemetery.
A resident of High Point most of his life, Joe was born December 25, 1929, in Greensboro, a son to the late Joseph R. Allred and the late Sue Jeffreys Allred. He attended High Point city schools and was a 1949 graduate of High Point High School. Joe was a charter member and past deacon at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, was a former Jay Cee, past member of the Elks Club and at the time of his death was a member of High Point Country Club. He also served on High Point University's Home Furnishings Advisory Board. In 1950 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, served during the Korean conflict, and was discharged in 1954 with the rank of staff sergeant. In September of 1954, after returning home from military service, he enrolled at High Point University, where he was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, graduating in June 1957 with a Degree in Business Administration.
Joe's career in the furniture industry began in March 1957 at Case-Casard Furniture Manufacturing Corporation, where he would become Executive Vice President before resigning in 1984. Later that year he joined Bernards Inc. as Vice President, retiring in 2002 as Senior Vice President and part owner. Joe will be remembered for his gift of telling great stories, his loyalty to his wife, and his devotion to his children. On November 4, 1989, he married the former Susan Swain Barbour, who survives of the home.
Also surviving are three daughters, Laura Jo Allred of Greensboro, Karen Allred Baldwin and her husband, Rob, of Belleair Beach, Florida, and Christy Allred Mix and her husband, Bill, of British Columbia, Canada; two step-sons, Steve Barbour and Brett Barbour and his wife, Christi, all of High Point; a sister, Margaret Chapman and her husband, Glen, of Orlando, Florida; six grandchildren, Blair, Devin, Ethan and Sarah Barbour and Emily and Sarah Baldwin and a special cousin, Carol Walker Courts of Colfax.
The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church following the service.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the good Samaritans who stopped at the scene of the accident, State Trooper Hicks of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Moore County Hospital, Baptist Hospital's Air Care Team and the staff at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center for their care and concern.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to the Forever Flower Fund at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, 836 West Lexington Avenue, High Point, NC 27262, or to the charity of one's choice.

Sue and family, Leighton and I are so upset over Joe's death...we have talked about him all weekend. You all have our deepest sympathy. The last time we saw him was at the beach.
