Joseph P. Benson

Benson, Joseph P. WATERFORD Joseph P. Benson, 87, of Craig Avenue, died Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at Samaritan Hospital. Born in Troy, he was the son of the late, Patrick and Helen Kavanagh Benson. He was a graduate of LaSalle Institute in Troy and a 1949 graduate of Siena College in Loudonville. Joe was employed for 27 years by Schenectady Naval Reactors at Knolls Atomic Power Lab and retired in 1982. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II. A communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Waterford, he was a former member of the Knights of Columbus Council 237 in Waterford. He is survived by his wife, Louise Kucharski Benson; his children, Patricia A. Archer (Patrick) of Glenville, Ellen A. O'Connor (Ralph) of Schenectady, Anthony J. Benson (Sherry) of Ballston Spa, Brigid A. Schaffer (Paul) of Danbury Conn., John F. Benson (Catherine) of Coxsackie, Roseann M. Janetka (James) of Beverly, Mass. and Paul J. Benson (Debra) of Penfield. Joe was the brother of the late John F. Benson and Eileen Moran. Also surviving are his loving grandchildren, Tara, Erica, Shannon, Kerry and Leanne Archer, Anthony and Julie Grimaldi, Bailey, Emma, Abby, Patrick, Margaret, Lauren and Joseph Benson, Sarah and Amber Schaffer; as well as several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. from the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St. (Rte. 32), Waterford and at noon at St. Mary of the Assumption Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Waterford.
