Joseph Burko, 90, of the Hudson section of Plains Township, died Saturday afternoon, January 29, 2011, at the Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center, Plains Township. Born in Hudson, he was a son of the late John and Clara (Wojtowicz) Burko. He was a graduate of Plains Memorial High School and attended Pennsylvania State University, attaining a degree in Electrical Engineering. Joe was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was employed as a radar technician for Tobyhanna Army Depot, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the former St. Joseph's Church, Hudson, and was currently a member of Ss. Peter & Paul Church, Plains Township. Joe was a devoted caregiver of his recently deceased wife, Julie, who passed away January 11 of this year. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Michael, Anthony, and John Burko; sisters, Mary Armillei, Anne Zabatka, Helen Serafin, Olga Burko, and Victoria Petrick; and his infant brother and sister. Surviving are his daughters, Barbara Lewis and her husband, Eric, Wilkes-Barre; Susan Monseur and her husband, Paul, Owego, N.Y.; and Karen Kazda and her husband, James, Candor, N.Y.; son, Joseph Burko Jr., and his wife, Susan, Cicero, N.Y.; grandchildren, Jill Materazzi, James II, and Jarrod Kazda and Todd Monseur and Kyle Burko; great-grandchildren, Evan James and Jace John; brother Walter Burko and his wife, Irene, Hudson; sister-in-law Margaret Burko, Fox Hill section of Plains Township; as well as several nieces and nephews. Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the Corcoran Funeral Home Inc., 20 S. Main St., Plains Township, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. in Ss. Peter & Paul Church, Plains Township. Interment with military honors will be held in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Hudson.
