Family-Placed Obituary

Joseph Edward Claytor Known as a real Texas media outlaw, a gruff and grumpy billygoat of a man, a loving husband, devoted father, promoter, publisher, band manager - a man dedicated to getting things done. If you've grown up in Texas and attended your share of rock shows, then you've likely attended a Joe Claytor Production. A major player credited with helping put the Texas scene on the map, Joe Claytor lost his life in a tragic car wreck on July 15th, 2005, along with his brother Doug and friend/co- worker, Bobby Greene. Born in Cadillac, Michigan, December 14, 1965, it didn't take long for a young Joe to find himself in the great state of Texas. Joe was always an extremely hard worker. He was recognized right away for his hard work ethic and instinctive talent for organizing ambitious projects. A few notable endeavors in Houston include promoting for clubs like the Axiom, Goats Head Soup, Urban Art Bar, Deep Phat - booking hundreds of artists from Beck to Carcass to Zeke. He was the creative force behind several potent publications that include Rivethead/Riveted, the Houston Compost, Pile, Jack Cash and most recently the widely-distributed and successful Reloaded Monthly (formerly Rank & Revue) based in Austin, Texas. Joe's biggest triumph was his beautiful family. Nestled in the hills of San Marcos, Joe neglected the rest of us to devote himself completely to his wife and children. It took a lot to convince him to jump back into the game but with only the support from Lila, Thoren, Tristana and Jarren. Claytor was sometimes a tough man to get along with but impossible to dislike. When his heart touched yours, you knew that you had a solid friend-a loyal friend for life. Joe was the epitome of a rough exterior housing a gem of incomparable worth. Joe is survived by wife Lila, his children, Thoren, Tristana and Jarren, his mother Christina Claytor and sister, Laurie Jahns. A visitation will be held at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home, Tuesday, July 19th 2005, from 6:00-8:00 p.m.,where funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 20th 2005.

Lila and kids....

We love you and are always here for you when you might need us. Remember the talks we used to have...about the future and hope beyond death. These things will serve to strengthen you further.

Joe Claytor was quite a man. I admit there were times when I absolutely loved him...and those rough times when I couldnt stand him. Its definitely not right that he isnt around anymore. I miss him.

Joe Claytor from what I have seen was looked up to by almost everyone that was around him... He was one of the hardest working people I have ever known especially when it came to taking care of his family... as a kid in the Houston scene I was always more than happy to be a part of any Joe Claytor production. He was loved by many. My thoughts are with his family Lila, Thoren, Jarren, Tristana, & his mother Christina.

Lila, I wish you all the best, and offer my most sincere sympathy on your loss. I thought Joe was always was a hoot and a holler, and always was cool to Vinal Edge Records. We ran some of our wildest ads back in the day in Rivethead, that no other big music mag would have let go to print. I will also remember his excited grin at record shows when buying or selling wild Kozik and Coop posters.

Wow...how long have I known Joe? When I first moved to Houston in like 1989 or 1990 Joe helped me get into my very first band ever. That was Manhole. From then on he was always a part of my life thru booking, writing, and any of the millions of things he did to help out the bands he loved. He was a guy with passion...and the talent to follow thru with whatever he set his mind to. He helped out so many of us....thanks Joe....Allison

~My prayers and condolences to the family~

I met Joe about 16 years ago. Joe watched me grow up while Kelly Watsons and I were "high school sweethearts".

Through the years of working in the industry, tons of mutual friends and loving Joes' productions and shows, we shared alot of laughs.

I now wish I would have known him better.

What I did know of Joe Claytor was truly a stand up guy. And a friend if you ever needed one.

I am very sorry for your loss.

I had the great pleasure of being Joes right hand man in the music biz for many years. We shared a friendship that went beyond running shows and putting out magazines. He was an inspiration and mentor to me. He was the glue and calalyst for an entire segment of the Houston music scene. He did not do it for the money. He had a saying of"Gonna rock out for the kids!" and that was what Joe was about. Rock on my brother.Nobody can ever do it like you did. EVER! We miss you JOE!!!!!!!

I met Joe about 18 years ago and my life was forever changed. He was so captivating, so young, so full of ideas, so creative and so stubborn! He is such an important part of my life and there is a huge empty place in my heart knowing that he is gone. I am overwhelmed with sorrow for all of his family and friends. He was so deeply loved by so many and Joe will be so greatly missed.
