Joseph Coppola Obituary

Published by The New Haven Register from Mar. 4 to Mar. 5, 2017.
Coppola Jr., Joseph P.Joseph P. Coppola Jr., age 79. It is with deep sadness in our hearts, that after a two year brave battle with AML, we announce the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, pop, brother, uncle and friend. Joe peacefully entered into eternal rest on March 2, 2017, in the comfort of his home. He transitioned to a better place with "Coppola Strong" family by his side. Joe's passing leaves a giant hole in the web and heart of his family. He did all of the things he loved to the end. He was the beloved husband of fifty-seven years to Marilyn (Taylor) Coppola. Joe was born at home in Ansonia on February 27, 1938, son of the late Joseph and Amelia Gagliardi Coppola. A lifelong resident of Ansonia, Joe was employed by Stop & Shop for forty-five years until his retirement in 2003. Joe's greatest loves were his family, the casino, traveling, Boston Red Sox and NY Rangers. In addition to his wife, he leaves a legacy to treasure his memory, daughter Carrie and favorite son in law Brian Butler, daughter Anne Coppola (Dawn Lantiere), son Joseph Coppola III, son Jeffery Coppola (Rebecca Kirpas), twelve grandchildren, Amelia Benjamin (Jarvis), Abby Pullo (Jason), Emily Butler, Joseph Coppola IV (Kerry), Sarah, Tori and Jason Coppola, Katherine, Nicolas and Jacob Coppola and Bobby and Davidjon Kirpas, six great grandchildren, Ayden Geltman, Ayana and Jaxon Benjamin, Camden and Deacon Coppola and Audrey Coppola. He also leaves behind sisters Mary Jane King (William), Clara Krupa and Sue Patchkofsky, a brother Anthony Coppola, brothers and sisters in law, James and Lola Taylor, Janet and Tom Heffernan and Rev. Philip Sharkey, best friends, June and George Geffert and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Michael Coppola and sister, Sally Lawlor. The family sends a heart-felt thank you to the caregivers at Smilow Cancer Hospital for their dedication and loving care over the course of Joe's illness. A special thanks to Dr. Nikolai Podoltsev, Stephanie Sanford, Lisa Barbarossa, and the 7th floor infusion nurses.Visiting hours will be held on Monday March 6, 2017, from 4:00-8:00 pm in the chapel of the SPINELLI-RICCIUTI/BEDNAR-OSIECKI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia. On Tuesday, relatives and friends are invited to meet directly at 10:00 am at Holy Rosary Church, 10 Father Salemi Drive, Ansonia, for a Mass of Christian Burial. Entombment will immediately follow in Mt. St. Peter's Mausoleum in Derby. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Closer to Free Fund, which jointly supports Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center at www.rideclosertofree.org/team/coppolastrong. As Joe would often say, "Always remember, time never stops." To send an act of sympathy, please visit www.spinelliricciutifh.com.

My heartfelt sympathy to the Coppola family. Joe was always smiling and was a great person as well as boss. He helped me with his wisdom and understanding both in my professional as well as my personal life. He was truly an honest family man and will be sorely missed. May his legacy live on in each of us who had the pleasure of his guidance and friendship. May God bless you all at this time of sorrow and may your many sweet memories be good for your souls. Amen.

To My Family

We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left til the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.... And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore, encourage each other with these words (1 Thessalonians 4:14-15, 17-18)

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
