Joseph (Dale) Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 6, 2024.
Smith family patriarch Joseph (Dale) passed away peacefully in his home on August 2, 2024, just shy of his 93rd birthday. He lived a long and colorful life, from his humble beginnings as the child of an itinerant worker in rural Alabama, to his time in the orphanages of Birmingham and Mobile, and eventually moving to Manhattan to live with his dear aunt Kathleen and her husband Karl. After finishing high school, he studied mechanical engineering at Purdue University, followed by an aerospace engineering degree at Utah State University. It was there that he met his soulmate and better half, LaNola Gudmundsen.

He was proud to have served in the United States Army as a flight line mechanic in Germany during the Korean War. His dedication to civil service continued throughout his life, which included serving in various capacities on the North Salt Lake City Council and one term as North Salt Lake City Mayor. Aerospace engineering was not only a career but a genuine passion for Dale, who flew his ERCU Ercoupe for pleasure until deciding to sell it because his growing family wouldn't fit inside.

Nothing was more important to Dale than his family. He took great joy in spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. No one who met Dale came away without at least one proud story about his family.

From his days as a youth in New York City, Dale was an avid shutterbug, embracing all the latest technologies in order to capture important moments and share them with others. In recent years, he focused on organizing, cataloguing, and printing digital photos to ensure that his family could enjoy those memories for years to come.

Dale and Nola were faithful members of the St. Olaf Catholic Parish in Bountiful, Utah, and spent many decades as very active participants in that community.

He was preceded in death by wife, LaNola; beloved son Mick; parents Bernard and Madge; brothers Bernard, Henry, and Jack; and nephews Jacques and Derek.

He is survived by his children Jon Smith (Teri), Christine Larrinaga (Raphael), Kathleen Smith (Jeff Hall), Roxane Sroczynski (Steven), Patrick Smith (Jana), Thomas Smith (Krista), and Mick's loving wife Miranda Smith, as well as 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

His family would like to thank the team at Inspiration Hospice, particularly Chenoa, Regan, and Jason, for their compassion and genuine affection for Dale. They would also like to thank the entire staff and all the residents of Creekside Senior Living Center, where Dale found the engaging and vibrant community that brought him so much happiness throughout his last three years.

Dale was a lifelong advocate for underprivileged children, so in lieu of flowers, his family knows that he would have appreciated seeing support go to Big Brothers Big Sisters of America (www.bbbs.org).

The family will be holding a memorial open house on Saturday, August 10th from 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM at 331 South 600 East, Salt Lake City UT 84102.

As Krista´s elementary school bestie, I met Dale during prenuptial engagements for Tom and Krista´s (Kris) wedding. My role was as one of Kris & Tom´s maids of honor, and I saw that Dale´s was Krista´s soon-to-be-provider´s provider.
At the time Dale was the head of the family, and his and Nola´s bond was evident. The strength of their commitment is and has been reflected in Tom & Kris´s marriage, which is 33 years-long and running strong.
As time went on Dale was still the backbone to the Smith family, who embraced Krista as one of their own, no different than one of Dale´s own daughters. In fact the entire Smith Family seems to braid into itself any newcomer as an integral part of their well-functioning unit, with Dale at the helm.
In most recent years Dale travelled between homes of his immediate and extended relations, relishing and gifting his time with family. Most of my memories of him are at dinner or outdoor barbecue, surrounding others with his calm and accepting demeanor.
It seems that Dale laid Nola to rest years ago, but that Nola was his world. As Krista observed after Dale´s passing, They are again together.

Nola and Dale were good friends with my parents and out families were close when I was growing up. It was always the question after mass on Sunday if we were "going to see the Smiths." Dale had a big heart and was generous and he and Nola made their home such an open and welcoming place. I miss them very much but the kindness they created are such a blessing in their absence.

What a gift this kind, intelligent, loving, beautiful, thoughtful man of God Dale was to his family and all of the people he touched during his life! "Uncle Dale" made such an important and lasting impression on our family while we had the privilege to have him live with us during his extended stay in Florida.

Jacques and I so valued our time with Dale and the important lessons about love and faith that he shared with our children. Our family loved Uncle Dale very much and the kids and I will continue to miss him until we're together again. Knowing he's at home with his Savior and with all of our family that were called to heaven earlier, does bring me a shimmer of joy. I know that Jacques had one of those favorite smiles for his Uncle Dale the second they were reunited. He probably hasn't stopped smiling, yet. That brings me a whole lot of peace.

We join Dale's kids, grandkids, great grandkids and all of those who he touched with his love in remembering a wonderful man. Thank you for sharing him with us.

Dale married my first cousin, Nola. Because my mom was the youngest of 10, I was closer in age to their children. Growing up, I just new they were family. I remember the Christmas parties and large family gatherings. I have fond memories of spending the night at the Smith's home. So many of the family has passed on now. Dale is reunited with his beloved wife. I pray for the peace of God to be on those left behind; who are feeling his absence. May his memory bring comfort.
