Joseph Day Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 15, 2012.
Joseph Patrick Day Jr., formerly of Brewer, Maine, lost his courageous battle with cancer on October, 10, 2012. He is predeceased by his parents Joseph P. Day, Pauline Day and his sister Mary Anne Knuble. He is survived by his son Patrick J Day (Arlington, VA) his grandchildren: Ryley Patrick J. Day (Bangor, ME), Deagan J. Day, Charlie Ann Day and his siblings: Barbara Murphy (Naples, FL), Philip Day (Chevy Chase, MD), James Day (Castine, ME) and Dennis Day (Trenton, ME).
He was born February 7, 1938 in Brewer, Maine and attended John Bapst High School in Bangor, Maine. Upon his graduation he served in The US Army and The Merchant Marines, during which time he was injured and honorably discharged. He then worked for the United States postal Service for several years until he retired. He has been living in the Washington DC area for over 40 years.
He loved God, his country and his family, especially his grandchildren of which he talked about constantly. He quietly showed us how to love unconditionally, never counting the cost. He was compassionate, loving and kind hearted. He always put others needs ahead of his own and never complained of his pain even to death. He is loved and missed by all that knew him.
The family requests that donations be made in Joe's name to the Veterans Hospital or Veterans programs. My Uncle Joe...

Great guy.. I have many fond memories of summers in Trenton w/ him and my cousins... He always seemed to be busy yet always had time for us kids, his family & friends. Later on - driving lessons, summer jobs in high school and college, a laugh... You could count on Uncle Joe if you needed him. He was a kind man w a quiet way... My mother loved him dearly. I'm really glad that his grand children had the opportunity to know him and he, them. He enriched the lives of many. We will all miss you, Uncle Joe.

Our hearts go out to Joe's family at this time and in the days ahead. Joe was a good man and it was obvious that he loved his family very much . We hope that happy memories will bring you all comfort as you grieve the loss of your loved one.
Patrick: We understand how difficult it is to lose a father and we want to express to you our deepest sympathies for your loss. Joe must have been a great Dad and he taught you well because you are a great Dad. He was proud of you and we hope that knowing that brings you comfort during this most difficult time.

All my love to the entire family. I met him only a couple times while he was in Maine visiting his family years ago. A good man.

Joe was SO devoted to his family, his parents, always, his brothers and sisters, always. He was always ready to help a friend. A fallen tree branch? He would show up with his chain saw (God, that was scary). Something would break down? He would show up with a bunch of tools to fix it. Not the right tool? He would come back the next day with another tool. He had lots and lots of tools. He liked to fix things. Old cars especially, he liked to give the old clunkers another chance. He endured a lot of pain throughout his life but he never sat around feeling sorry for himself, nor harbored anger. He kept going. But I am angry, I must admit; he still had a lot of living to do; he was strong and tough and so brave; angry because the disease won.
My deepest sympathy to all the members of his family.

Uncle Joe was a wonderful person - he cared for everyone that knew him, and he never seemed to forget anyone. He will be missed, but always remembered.
