Joseph GALLAGHER Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix on Mar. 23, 2016.
Gallagher, Joseph Charles
late of Saskatoon
June 15, 1932 – March 19, 2016
It is with profound sadness the family announces the passing of Joe Gallagher on March 19, 2016 in Saskatoon after a brief illness. Joe is survived by his children Dennis, Brian (Debbie), and Wendy (Art); his grandchildren Amy (Tyler), Derek, Lindsey, Trina (James), Megan (Hayley), Jesse (Randi), Tyson (Toni) and Mitch, great-grandchildren Tanner, Cayle, River, Summer, Rose, Shayle, Ashely, Raydin, Sage and Carson; his brother Patrick Gallagher, sisters-in-law Electa, Laura, Mary and Marlene (Milton), and several nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by his loving wife Vera, his parents Charles and Eleonore; brothers Jack, and Terry, and several other important family members. Joe was born in Saskatoon on June 15, 1932. Joe was raised on a farm by Grandora and attended Gideon School. Joe moved to the city in his teens with his mother and brothers to work and pursue his passion for fast pitch softball. He met the love of his life, Vera, at the softball diamond on August 7, 1952 and they were married on September 25, 1954. They were seldom apart up to Vera's passing in 2011. Together they raised their three children in Saskatoon where both Vera and Joe proudly supported them and their grandchildren through many sporting and school activities. Joe was a very hard worker and had strong passions for music, education and ball. He had many jobs including Eltroplating, Quaker Oats and Corner Store owners and operators. While working these jobs, and providing for his family, he advanced his education and obtained his bachelor's degree in education in 1975. After achieving his degree he taught at several schools until his retirement. He was part of a team that created the first Provincial Native Studies (10, 20, 30) curriculum. Joe was an active member of Saskatchewan Softball Association. His softball career included playing for such teams as Hamilton's Garage, CNR Carmen, Saskatoon College Lads, Saskatoon Centennials, K & K Olsen, and playing in the 1st Canadian Native Fastball Championships with James Smith First Nations. In addition to playing ball, he began coaching in 1968. He continued to play and coach his own team into his 80's. This included several games with 3 generations of Gallagher's on the field. Joe was a versatile guitar player with an amazing voice. His musical endeavours included using music as a tool to entertain and educate thousands of school children. He was involved with many bands, playing everything from old time country to popular rock tunes. He continued this involvement until his passing. The family would like to send a sincere thank you to the staff of Central Haven Special Care Home for helping make Joe's last few months ones of comfort and dignity. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to one of Joe's favourite initiatives, Saskatoon Amateur Softball Museum. Vigil of Prayer will be held on Monday, March 28, 2016 beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian burial will take place on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. Both Services will be held at the St. Patrick Parish Centre (3339 Centennial Drive). Rite of Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Condolences may be left at www.saskatoonfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are entrusted to Saskatoon Funeral Home.
