Sixty years ago tis coming Thursday, Joe married my wife, Linda, and me. We've had a good marriage, and are grateful to him for his help in getting it started.

Thank you Joe Heckel and family. Because of your assistance, my juvenile lifer husband is home with me today, after 34 years of incarcerated marriage! God will certainly say good work my loyal and faithful servant for all his fruit. Prayers for and blessings wished for his family.

Long live Joe Heckel! Many don't know that Joe was a pioneer in the juvenile lifers' movement. He spent tireless, countless hours and spent his own money on the cause until his health gave out and he could no longer push on. He drafted up Amicus Briefs on behalf of Fight For Lifers West and submitted them to the Supreme Ct. in Miller vs. Alabama as well as in PA after the ruling. He worked with Bradley Bridge of the Defenders' Association to gain justice in PA for juvenile lifers. Together, they drafted PCRAs for lifers to file as soon as it became the law using his own personal money. He was a humble man who never broadcast his deeds. He worked tirelessly as an official visitor with the PA Prison Society for decades. It was my pleasure to work alongside Joe, to join him in court, to have him mentor me and to enjoy his company. He was the elderly wise man, who never took no gruff from anyone and especially not from the prison system, who stood up and gave a voice to those who didn't have one. He was a man of vision and when the first juvenile lifer was released, I called him and sent along a picture and he was overjoyed. It had been his life's greatest accomplishment. Now, many juvenile lifers are beginning to enjoy freedom and don't even know his name or what part he has played. He is a vital part of their history who should never be forgotten. Long live Joe Heckel!!
