Age 92, of Gibsonia (formerly Bloomfield), passed away June 24, 2018 at West Penn Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Ben Avon, he was the son of the late Joseph E. and Elizabeth (MacDougall) Heckel. He was the beloved husband for 67 years of Joan (Goodwin) Heckel, and father of Dr. David G. Heckel of Jena, Germany; Sarah G. Lavoie (Marc) of Orlando; Rebekah G. Criss of New Castle; and Martha H. Crummy (Bill) of Gibsonia. Five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive him. After graduating from Avonworth High School in 1943, Mr. Heckel joined the U.S. Navy and served on a destroyer in WWII. He received a degree in Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1949, and graduated from the Western Theological Seminary in 1952. He served as a Presbyterian pastor at Long Run Church in Irwin PA, The Railbelt Church in Alaska, Third Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, and Trinity UP Church in Mars PA. In 1971 he received a Master of Education degree from the University of Pittsburgh and became a Vocational Counselor in several high schools, and retired from Mars Area High School. He worked passionately with mission Jubilee Partners in Georgia. He and his wife Joan were deeply involved in mission work during the turmoil in Central America, and in later years with prisoners in Pennsylvania State Penitentiaries, particularly Juvenile Lifers. Mr. Heckel enjoyed gardening with his wife, whether in the permafrost of Alaska, the huge gardens he had while raising his family, or in the community garden of Bloomfield. He nurtured growth in these gardens, as well as in people while serving as a pastor, counselor, advocate and friend. He shared the Word and love of God. Mr. Heckel impacted many lives in his professional career, on his many mission trips and through his volunteer work. Visitation is at WINTER FUNERAL HOME PC, 4730 Friendship Avenue, Pittsburgh PA 15224 on Wednesday, June 27 between 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 1 at 2 p.m. , at East Liberty Presbyterian Church, 116 S. Highland Avenue, Pittsburgh PA 15206. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Jubilee Partners, 427 Jubilee Rd, Comer, Georgia 30629.

Long live Joe Heckel! Many don't know that Joe was a pioneer in the juvenile lifers' movement. He spent tireless, countless hours and spent his own money on the cause until his health gave out and he could no longer push on. He drafted up Amicus Briefs on behalf of Fight For Lifers West and submitted them to the Supreme Ct. in Miller vs. Alabama as well as in PA after the ruling. He worked with Bradley Bridge of the Defenders' Association to gain justice in PA for juvenile lifers. Together, they drafted PCRAs for lifers to file as soon as it became the law using his own personal money. He was a humble man who never broadcast his deeds. He worked tirelessly as an official visitor with the PA Prison Society for decades. It was my pleasure to work alongside Joe, to join him in court, to have him mentor me and to enjoy his company. He was the elderly wise man, who never took no gruff from anyone and especially not from the prison system, who stood up and gave a voice to those who didn't have one. He was a man of vision and when the first juvenile lifer was released, I called him and sent along a picture and he was overjoyed. It had been his life's greatest accomplishment. Now, many juvenile lifers are beginning to enjoy freedom and don't even know his name or what part he has played. He is a vital part of their history who should never be forgotten. Long live Joe Heckel!!
