Joseph Hutt Jr Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 1, 2024.
Reno - Joseph Hutt Jr. was born November 8, 1946 in New York City to Lillian Quist Hutt and Joseph Hutt Sr. He was raised in Poughkeepsie, New York alongside his siblings Donna, Barry, Brian, and Geraldine. He could be found as a young man building houses with his father and his best friend Harold or sitting with his mother whom he often referred to as one of his closest confidants. His wife of forty-five years, Marlene Hutt, was his true life companion sharing a love of the world and each other. Their stories reach around the globe and often found them either on the trails in Africa or the warm sand beaches of Mexico. He passed away in Manzanillo, Mexico on April 12, 2024.

His love for building spurred his four decade long career as an electrical engineer. Having graduated from Union College while working at IBM he went on to contribute greatly to the technology industry. At IBM his projects bolstered Mexico's expansion into the computer industry, galvanized collaboration with teams in Japan and China developing and maintaining key industry objectives, and helped to develop the Power PC. He ended his career as a CEO and VP of Engineering at Pyxis.

In light of his professional accomplishments he always maintained his greatest contribution to the world were his children, Alison, Courtney, Christopher, David, Leah, Geniene, Amy, Molly, and Sydney. He was a kind and compassionate father and grandfather who believed giving back to the world was a person's most important job which he bestowed to his children. His wisdom and deep philosophical belief of being a good person is etched in his children and will live on through his grandchildren, Jessica, Jake, Olivia, Sara, Jillian, Lukas, Lillian, Andrew, Scarlett, and Cora.

A humble man that in his later years would travel to over 82 countries, touching people with his curiosity and sincerity. His passion for travel and adventure was omnipresent in his mountain endeavors, motorcycle races, and 20 marathons. Perhaps one of his greatest joys was traveling on his BMW 1200 Touring bike that he rode all over the world. His passport and heart were full giving and receiving love wherever he traveled. To the snowy summit of Kilmanjaro with Marlene, the solitude of the Serhengetti and Death Valley, hidden roads of Mongolia, and the fiery depths of China his inquisitiveness and love for the world and all living things radiated from his words, actions, and ultimately life.

He was above all a great man who treated people with respect and kindness, who believed everyone should have an opportunity, who championed women's rights, civil rights, and human rights. He quietly advocated for the global community and contributed to everyone around him, giving, not taking from the world, giving everything he could.

I was fortunate to meet Joe and Marlene in Tanzania in 2010. We hiked Kili together and enjoyed running into each other when on safari. Their kindness was ever present and their storytelling riveting. They have remained in my thoughts ever since. I have included a picture of Joe at the base of Lava Tower with Johnny. I wanted to climb to the top but opted to take a rest instead. Joe was the only one that did it. I saw that the man's determination was only surmounted by his joy. He was a great man who emphasized the greatness in others. My deepest sympathies to Marlene and the rest of their beautifully large family.

We are saddened to hear of Joe's passing. He was our Best Man at our wedding in 1971. Our sincere condolences to Marlene and his large family. He certainly was a man of the world in many ways! May all of your memories give you peace and a smile. We can certainly reflect on memories of our own even from as far back as high school. We have some smiles as well.
Joe, you left your tracks around the world!
