Izzo, Joseph A. MALTA Joseph A. Izzo, 69, passed away Sunday, July 9, 2017, following an intensive battle with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma over the past several years. Born in Troy on February 6, 1948, son of the late Sanford and Carmella Sgambati Izzo Sr., Joe was a 1966 graduate of Mechanicville High School, where he starred in football and baseball. He graduated from Princeton University in 1970 with a degree in civil engineering. Joe was a vice-president/ senior project manager for HDR Inc. in New York City. He previously had worked for Berger-Lehman, A.G. Lichenstein Engineers, URF Engineering Company and the New York State Dept. of Transportation. Joe's expertise was in bridge and road design, and had served as the Quality Quality Control Officer for the new construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge replacement project in Tarrytown, N.Y. His insight and knowledge of civil engineering was well known and sought after. Joe had lately become a licensed Lay Minister, and married numerous family members and friends. A total sports fan, Joe always rooted for his New York Yankees, the Ohio State Buckeyes, enjoyed playing handball, softball, golf and others. He loved thoroughbred horse racing, spending summer days at Saratoga Race Track, and getting together with his former classmates and many, many friends. He loved to travel all over the world, seeing new and exciting places. To sum up Joe's life in several words, he LOVED people and was a remarkable and unforgettable man. Survivors include the love of his life, his adoring wife, Helene Welch Izzo; children, Cailin (Jon Taisey) Peek and Aaron Peek both of Malta; his loving sister, Lucille (Tino) Pallotta of Avon, Conn.; and loyal brother, Sam (Annette) Izzo of Schenectady; nieces and nephews, Meghan (Marc) Russo, Sam (Kim) and Lee (Katie) Pallotta, Jack and Mitch Kowalski, Joseph (Beth) Corbi, David (Janet) Corbi, Jennifer (Patrick) Kane, Rachael Phelan (Joe Santa Maria), Rebecca Phelan (Brendan Roberts), Jessica Lyons (Anthony Tessari), Jillian (Mark Talmadge) and Bill Lyons; along with great-nieces and nephews, Ava, Veronica, Luke, Piper, Sawyer, Cailin, Peyton, Kaitlin, David, Hannah, Katherine, Megan, and James. I worked with Joe for many years in NYSDOT and also knew him from Saratoga, where I lived. He was absolutely a walking ray of sunshine. His smile lit up the world. No matter what chaos was happening around us, he made it dim. The world has lost a beautiful soul and I hope he´s brightened heaven.

Seeing this remembrance of Joe pop up makes me very sad but also brings a smile to my face. The sadness is obvious due to the loss of an amazing man, friend, son, brother and husband! The smile is because of Joe´s infectious personality and warmth which he showed to everyone he met. Joe is still missed so deeply and always will! We love you very much! Our prayers are always with you Helene and your family! With all our love, Jordy, Patty and our entire family!

Helene and family

Joe has been more than a colleague to me, he has been a friend and confidant. I will miss his smile, his great heart, his wisdom, his zest for life. The news of his departure find me thousands miles away in Greece, remembering stories he shared when you visited couple of years ago. Yet, Joe is always close. Like he will be always there close to you in everything that has life. May the good memories offer you comfort this hour of immense sadness

To Joe's family - I hope you realize the positive legacy Joe has at HDR. I worked with Joe for many years in his quality endeavors. He was one of the nicest and most upbeat people I've ever had the pleasure to work with. He was the consummate engineering professional, a mentor to many, and just simply a fun guy to be around. There aren't many like Joe which I'm sure you know. He will be missed by many. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I was so sorry to hear about this I never really worked with Joe but got to know him pretty well when I was playing softball with the White Plains team. Joe was a frequent visitor to our games and after-game parties at Uncle Henry's. I became very fond of him what a great guy, great personality, great witty sense of humor. Always ready to buy the team a round. When I read that he'd been a popular bartender I thought to myself, yeah, I can definitely see how that could be. I'm sure he will be greatly missed by all that knew him. My deepest condolences to all his family and friends.

Helene, Cailin, Aaron and family, I extend my very deepest condolences. I'm heartbroken for all of you. Joe was truly "one of the best!" He was one of the most kind, friendly, caring, smart, and funny guys anyone could ever know. It was so great working with Joe for over the past 4 years. No matter what he was going through he was never one to complain and still thought of others and tried to brighten someone else's day. I was very fortunate to have known Joe, I consider myself lucky. He truly lived life every day! Joe will be greatly missed by so many, but I know he's at peace now. God bless Joe

Helene and Joe's immediate family members, I am deeply saddened by the news of Joe's passing. He and I go way back. The news comes as a real shocker and on the heals of Joe and I reconnecting after a 50 year hiatus. I am thankful that I had the good fortune of reuniting with Joe a few short years ago. Joe was a great guy and he will always be one of my favorites.

Rest in peace, my friend.

My deepest sympathy goes out to the entire Izzo family, and to Helene and Sammy especially. Although I have not seen Joe the last few years I carry with me many fond memories of our friendship. I spent many an afternoon and evening sitting across the bar from "Joey" at Sebastians and the Yorkstone Pub during his bartending days. Being from Mechanicville we always had much to talk about, and Joe was always a fountain of information that came with a boatload of laughs. He was loved and admired by a lot of people, that I know. I was very saddened to hear of his declining health back in May. I know he had his struggles, but I also know he is now at peace. I feel very fortunate to have known Joe Izzo. He was truly a good man, from a great family (loved his parents), and he will be missed. RIP my friend.
