Joseph Edward “Joe” Jakes, 59, Anderson, died Sept. 12, 2008, at his residence, surrounded by his family, following an extended illness.

He was born Aug. 11, 1949, in Paragould, Ark., and had resided in Anderson for most of his life.

He was a graduate of Anderson High School, Class of 1968.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

On Sept. 18, 1971, he married Pam Minton in Anderson.

Joe had been employed for 35 years as a furnace attendant at Brockway Glass, retiring in April 2006.

He was a member of American Legion and a life member of DAV. He loved building things, working in his yard and spending time with family and friends. He was a very detail-oriented person. He loved his six grandpuppies, J.D., Maggie, Sidney, Charlie, Spliff and Bud Dog.

Surviving are his wife, Pam (Minton) Jakes of Anderson; daughter and son-in-law, Tammie and Jeff Sylvester of Indianapolis; son and daughter-in-law, Billy K. and Michelle D. Jakes of Fortville; three grandchildren, Scott Allen, Tanner Scales and Zach Sylvester, all of Anderson; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Cary and Tina Jakes of Noblesville, Mike and Ronda Jakes of Kentucky and Neal and Kathy Jakes of Anderson; several nieces and nephews; and special close friends.

Joe was preceded in death by his father, Billy G. Jakes; mother, Louise (Osban) Newman; mother-in-law, Jere Stephens; father-in-law, Morris Minton; and special friends, Rick Doran and Fred McKinley.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service, 229 S. Rangeline Road, Anderson, officiated by Pastor Jim Boicourt. Burial will be at Mechanicsburg Cemetery with military graveside rites by VFW Post 266 Honor Guard.

Visitation will be 1 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
