Three years later - hard to believe - and we still miss our dear friend. Those he left behind in fantasy sports world have made sure we now keep in much better touch. Butch was our COMMISH! We won't forget this special friend!

With the passing of time, the acute pain of grief diminishes, Although the heartache of your loss continues, I hope that you can continue to find comfort in your cherished memories of Butch, and in the God of tender mercies who feels the pain of your loss. Please accept my sincere condolences.

My sympathies to the Mavel family. About 1970 was my first recollection of Butch - I was playing in a pickup basketball game at DT&CC. I had previously played in north New Jersey where I grew up. Most Sussex players were so much faster than I, that it seemed I was playing in slow motion. Butch was playing point guard, and unlike me, he was faster and more adept at his basketball skills so that he excelled. He really was good with a basketball!

Butch was always a mentor to me and others, always going beyond was expected of him being a friend of the family and playing football and other sports in high School. With my brothers then being a coach to my brother and I later on at Central, When I heard of his passing all I could think of was Butch doing sprints on the old high school football field like he did so many times Godspeed to my friend!

Sue,Holly, and family,
Butch was something special to me at that age when a boy wants to participate in sports and wants to figure out what it takes. One of the very best coaches and mentors for that time was Butch. He was always upbeat and encouraging. You didn't do anything wrong you just had to do it better and he would show and explain. Grier was funny with his ragtag comment. What I always remember is years ago there were a bunch of us ragtag kids hanging around Georgetown on Saturdays and we were many. Guess who produced the key to the gym so we could play multiple basketball games for hours week after week. Butch...I hope you had permission? You will be missed by many.

The smile
The laugh
Will not be forgotten,
George Booth

The Marvel's were always my neighbors and remember when Holly watched me when I would walk home with Shannon. I always enjoyed playing as a kid and my dad and Butch would pull us kids around on the sled during snow days. When I would go over I always remembered Butch doing his crosswords and wouldn't stop working on until he finished it. I will also remember him when he was my teacher at SCHS. Butch was a good athletic person who will be missed by many and I know it won't be the same from my family or I to not see him riding around town on his bike or at the gym. Rest in peace Mr. Marvel you are a true good hearted individual who is now free of pain. I still get chocked up when I look over knowing I have spend my childhood around the family so glad he was my neighbor!

My wife and I moved next door to Butch a little over a year ago. Butch welcomed us with open arms. We talked often about family.
May God bless you as you enter His kingdom.

Butch was such a great friend long after having established himself as a great role model for me. I already miss him so much, as one of his ragtag friends.

Knew Butch from Georgetown and the "sports"world and teaching center. Dave knew him from sports, Army Reserves, and a man doing the right thing for kids.
Our prayers and thoughts with all his family and he is with our Heavenly Father.

As a kid growing up in G-town when sports was a bonding for so many young boys you idolized certain athletes for their talent and character and you rooted for their success. When you mentioned just a sir name everyone knew who they were. Costen (Shockley), Chris (Short), Billy(LeGates),
Johnny (Morris), Butch (Marvel). All these
guys obtained that moniker of respect not only for their athletic prowess but as well as their character and sense of community. Another one of my childhood idols has left us for a far greater playing field. Thank you Butch for enriching the lives of everyone one you touched. Indeed you were champion
