Joseph Montie Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 22, 2010.
Dr. Joseph Emery Montie of Columbia died December 22, 2010 at Boone Hospital Center. He was 70 years old. Joe was born in Detroit, Michigan to Beatrice and Raymond Montie on September 23, 1940. He married Kathleen Joynt on July 11, 1964 and the following year received his Doctor of Medicine with honors from Wayne State University College of Medicine. Following his post-graduate training in urology he joined the faculty at the University of Missouri as an Associate Professor of Surgery. He then entered private practice as a member of the Boone Clinic and remained active in his urology profession until 2003. Joe was an excellent surgeon. His CV is remarkable for many accomplishments including an entry in “Who’s Who in America. As a medical officer he served in the U.S. Air Force in Germany. He and a surgical colleague pioneered new advances in trans-sexual surgery which received world-wide recognition. Academically he remained active and was involved with yet another research grant at the time of his death. He authored and co-authored many publications and with his quick wit and affable manner was a favorite instructor with the surgical house staff. He served as Chief of Surgery at Boone Hospital and was the senior member of the Associated Urologists. Joe was truly exuberant about life. He adored his family and his profession. Many patients remember his compassionate care which they received regardless of their ability to pay. He was an avid reader devouring sometimes two to three books a week during most of his adult life. He had a passion for adventure which led him, along with his three compadres, to hunting trips in the Argentinian Andes, fresh water fishing in the Amazon, deep sea fishing trips including a marlin tournament in Grenada, rafting the Rio Grande River with his sons and scuba diving in Belize. Joe laughed loudly and often, loved his pet dogs, was both profound and profane at times, enjoyed good Martinis and did stand-up comedy at De Je Vu. He was fondly described by many as the most amazing character they knew. He was preceded in death by his wife Kathy and step-daughter Melissa. He met and married his gentle and loving wife Betty Gebhardt and she survives. Joe is also survived by his three children, son Chris and wife Carol, daughter Paula and son Matt; a sister Kay Montie McGlynn and husband Joe and a brother Dr. James E. Montie and wife Jeanne all of Ann Arbor, Michigan; loving grandchildren Emily, Emory, Madeline, Makenzie, Alec, Zachary, Gabriel and Macy Rose; his step-son Chris Gebhardt and wife Debbie, step-grandchildren Maddie, Bella, Luca and Willa of Columbia. Visitation services will be held on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at Memorial Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 PM with a mass service at 10:00 AM on Thursday, December 30, 2010 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Central Missouri Food Bank and the American Heart Association.

After having been away for several years, I returned to find that Dr. Joe Montie had passed.I am so sad to hear this and want his family to know that I will also miss him. Joe was one of the most memorable and witty persons I have ever known and he was also a terrific doctor. My deepest sympathy goes to his entire family.
