Joseph Clyde Poore

Joseph Clyde Poore Sr. Joseph Clyde Poore Sr., 85, of Bluff City, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 22, 2013, at the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born on January 21, 1928, in Sullivan County, Tenn., in the Paperville Community, a son of the late Howard H. Poore and Pearl Ardith Campbell Poore and lifelong resident of the Bristol area. Mr. Poore was a graduate of Holston Valley High School and a graduate at East Tennessee State University with top honors as Magna Cum Laude at the age of 71. He was a lifelong employee with the U.S. Postal Service where he started work in 1953 as a railway mail clerk and then a mail clerk in Bristol, Tenn., was director of finance in Richmond, Va., and then was past postmaster at Big Stone Gap, Va., and retired as postmaster in Abingdon, Va. He was a member of Tri-City Civil War Round Table, was a charter member of the Volunteer Baptist Church where he was a deacon and was involved with the choir and church music. He was also involved with the Bluff City and Chinquapin Grove Senior Group and was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving during World War II between 1945 and 1949 on the USS Midway and USS Coral Sea. He was preceded in death by a sister, Anne Milhorn. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Emma Mumpower Poore; son, Joseph Clyde Poore Jr. and wife, Susan; daughter, Kathy Poore Craft and fiance', Mack Moore; six grandchildren, Jackie Mumpower and husband, Jayson, Jacob Smith and Fletcher Smith, Emily Taylor and husband, Jared, Abby Graham and husband, Jace and Mallory Wilcox; eight great-grandchildren, Joseph Whitaker, Morgan Whitaker, Andy Whitaker, Aspen Simerly, Dylan Wilcox, Anna Wilcox, Payton Graham and Ryan Mumpower; brother, Henry Wayne Poore; several nieces and nephews; two brothers-in-law, William Mumpower and wife, Barbara, Everette Mumpower and wife, June; two sisters-in-law, Ermal Monteith and Carolyn Wright. Funeral services will be conducted 7 p.m. Sunday, August 25, 2013, at the Volunteer Baptist Church with the Rev. Tony French, Dr. Kenneth Jordan and the Rev. Darryl Blair officiating with family receiving friends from 5:30 until 7 p.m. Sunday before services at the church. The committal will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 26, 2013, at the Shipley Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Bristol VFW Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Mack Moore, Jacob Smith, Jared Taylor, Jace Graham, Ron Leonard, Matt Bailey, Rick Hill and Hal Boyd. Honorary pallbearers will be Gene Fogleman, Ben Bradley, Stanley Mann, Jay Miller, Matt Poore, Sam Poore, Bill Settle, Jimmy Henson and Bud Wright.
