The Reverend Joseph Rhodes . Age 95 passed away at the Carmel Home on December 6. He was born in Knottsville, Kentucky, the son of the late Edwin Joseph and Alma Aull Rhodes. He was a graduate of St. Francis Academy and attended St. Mary College in St. Mary, Kentucky. He received his philosophy and theology training at St. Meinrad Seminary in St. Meinrad, Indiana. He was ordained by the Most Reverend Francis R. Cotton at Stephen Cathedral on June 7, 1941.
His assignments include Associate Pastor at St. Joseph Church, Owensboro, Holy Name Henderson, St. Joseph, Bowling Green, St. Francis de Sales and Rosary
Chapel, Paducah. Father Rhodes was Pastor at St. Peter's, Waverly from 1955 - 1965, Holy Name, Henderson 1965- 1969, pastor and rector at St. Stephen Cathedral from 1996 - 1985; St. Anthony, Browns Valley 1985 - 1989. He served as Dean for the Owensboro Deanery for 16 years. Father Rhodes Retired to the Cotton Apartments and served as Chaplain for the Carmel Home until 2004.
Father Rhodes was a member and Chaplain of the Knights of Columbus Council # 817. They named their building Rhodes Hall in appreciation of his many hears of service.
Father Rhodes loved to travel and led many pilgrimage trips to Europe. He was also a friend of the poor. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Capelle, and Angela Kerrick.
Father Rhodes is survived by his brother Thomas Anthony Rhodes( wife Kay) of Owensboro, Nieces Barbara Horn, Midland, Texas, Dottie Brian (Dave), Louisville, Kentucky Bettye Rouse (Jerry), Paula Fisher (Jerry), Ann Simon, Owensboro, Anne Rhodes Miller (Don), Morristown, N.J. and a nephew Dudley Capelle, Corydon, Indiana.
Funeral will be at St. Stephen Cathedral on Friday, December 10 at 10:00 am , Burial at Resurrection Cemetery.
Visitation at Carmel Home on Thursday. Dec. 9th from 2:30 to 4:30pm and at St. Stephen Cathedral from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm with prayers at 6:30 pm
Expression of Sympathy may take the form of donations to the St. Stephen Cathedral Renovation Fund or to the Elderly Priest's Care Fund 600 Locust Street, Owensboro, Kentucky 42301.
