Joseph Sayers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 5, 2025.
Sayers-Joseph William, age 87, a longtime resident of Lake George, NY, Lake Placid, NY, Palm Coast, FL, and Atlantic Beach, FL, passed away peacefully with his beloved wife by his side at his home in Atlantic Beach, Florida. He is predeceased by his mother, Lillian Frances, and his father, Joseph William Sr. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 57 years, Frances Natalie, daughters Kristen Michelle Sayers and Tracie Sayers Murphy, and her husband Tom Turph Murphy.

Joe was born on October 19, 1937, in Hawthorne, NY. In 1947, the family settled in Albany, NY, where Joe attended Christian Brothers Academy before pursuing higher education at Villanova University, graduating in 1959. He then followed his passion for Hotel Management at the University of Michigan, graduating in 1962. Shortly thereafter, he embarked on his illustrious career as a hotelier. Beginning at the Ten Eyck Hotel in Albany, NY, he spent several years at the Gideon Putnam in Saratoga Springs, NY, before managing the Queensbury Hotel in Queensbury, NY, and finally overseeing Henry Wright's Jolly Roger in Lake George, where he met his bride-to-be, Franny.

Upon arriving at the queen of the lakes, Joe discovered a newfound passion for boating. He cherished spending his days off on the water with friends, exploring the islands and bays of Lake George. One day, while exploring Diamond Island, he laid eyes on The Antlers for the first time-a moment that solidified his connection to the area and inspired him to create his crown jewel resort.

As the visionary behind the iconic Antlers Reef Pub, Restaurant, and Marina, Joe became a beloved host to many. Known for his friendliness, quick wit, and charming demeanor, he shared meals and raised glasses with people from all walks of life, from rock stars, supermodels. sports legends, local legends and the occasional gangster.

During the winter months, Joe could be found carving through the snow of Gore and Whiteface Mountains, always happy to make turns with his buddies or cheer on his girls at a ski race.

Joe, a true finder and keeper of friends, will be warmly welcomed into eternal dwellings by his family, friends, and pets who passed before him. We are certain that his family and friends will greet him with a joyous celebration, where beers and margaritas will flow freely. To honor Joe's memory, please consider raising a glass and toasting with his favorite cocktail, "The Antler's Blue Margarita."

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the American Heart Association or the New York Ski Education Foundation's Scholarship for Girls are appreciated. A memorial on Lake George will be held at a later date.

Fran, Kristen and Tracie -

I was so sad to hear of Joe's passing from Zimm and Kathy. Sounds like, as beautifully described in the obituary, that Joe had a remarkable life! A lot of which, I was not aware. Thinking of you and fondly remembering what a great guy Joe was. Here's to a life well lived.

Sincerely,
Eileen Dempsey
