Schwedler, a Navy SEAL, was participating in his team's assault on a home occupied by terrorists involved in the recent downing of a Coalition helicopter. An Iraqi soldier involved in the joint operation also was killed, and two other SEALs were wounded.
Schwedler, the eldest son of Carl Joseph and Susan Herrington Schwedler of Crystal Falls, was born May 1, 1979, in Iron Mountain. He graduated from Crystal Falls Forest Park High School in 1997, and attended Michigan State University before becoming a Navy SEAL. He joined the Navy in 2002. After basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Station, he completed his training in San Diego and was assigned to SEAL Team FOUR in Virginia Beach, Va. He was a dedicated member of the SEALs and reenlisted in the Navy while in Iraq during his first tour of duty there in 2005. He returned to Iraq in October 2006 and had been scheduled to return to the U.S. later this month.
Schwedler participated in many high school activities, including football, basketball, and track. He was active in student council and served as senior class president. While at Michigan State, Schwedler was a member of the rowing team. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, skiing and camping. Schwedler is survived by his parents; his sister, Catherine, of Ferndale; his brother, Thomas and his sister-in-law, Mary, of West Bend, Wis. His grandparents are Ann Kavanagh Schwedler and the late John Thomas Schwedler of Port Austin; and Charles Clark Herrington and the late Jeannette Buckley Herrington, of Bad Axe.
A military funeral will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 14, 2007, CST at the Forest Park High School gymnasium in Crystal Falls. Further information is available from the Jacobs-Plowe funeral home.
A scholarship fund will be established with the Crystal Falls Area Community Fund, P.O. Box 269, Crystal Falls, MI 49920.

Clark,
Just wanted to send you a little note today. I've been thinking about you a lot now that summer is rolling around. I'm going back home in a few weeks and remember how much fun we had racing around the lake in the kayaks, although I'm pretty sure you waited around on purpose to make it close a few times.
What I've really been thinking about lately is how much we always had in common, and as we grew older how we managed to grow with each other. I remember always looking forward to you coming home whether it be from Michigan State, Telluride or one of your tours to fill me in on your latest adventures. I was always so jealous. It seemed our interests always paralleled each others.
I don't think I'll ever find another individual I connect with like I did with you. I don't think it's possible.
I miss you!

I couldn't decide if I should address your family, or you personally. But I think of you not just every Memorial Day, but at least once a day. I provided support to your unit in Iraq, and I regretfully didn't know you by name until I had heard what happened to you. I saluted your casket in the C130 as they brought you home to your family. Your loss hurts my soul more than anything else thats happened in my life, and I wish I could tell you in person how thankful I am for you being a true hero.

Thinking of you today on this Memorial Day. Wished I could have been at the the ceremony last week, heard it was wonderful. I cried today during the ceremony in Port Austin as I thought of you and how much you loved it there. Thanks for providing us with the most perfect day as we honored you and your fellow soldiers. We miss you so much and we know you were smiling today, as your dad marched in the good ole PA parade.

To the family Joseph Schwedler,
Our girls were only two and an infant when Clark gave his life for his country. We used to live on the same street in Virginia Beach. Clark was a wonderful neighbor, and always sweet to our little ones. Today our girls are 7 and 5, and we told them about Mr. Clark, as my two year old called him, and why we honor him, especially today. We often think of him, as well as you, and pray for you. There are not many like Clark, as you surely know, and we were blessed to have met him and know him in the short time we were neighbors.
Remembering Clark and with gratefulness to his family,

Clarkus-
Thought about you all day today. It's hard to believe it's been four years since your death. Time does not make your absence easier but it does take a lot of the pain away. Now I have an easier time of remembering the essence of you; how amazingly happy you were as a Navy SEAL and the effect you had on your cousins and family to have a similar work ethic to be the best they could be. I was always proud of you and only wish you could have lived so I could see whatever else you wanted to accomplish in your life.

Hey Clark,
Four years ago, wow where does the time go? I wanted to check in with you. I miss you.
Over the last four years I've never forgotten the things you've taught me. I still strive everyday to be the individual you would want me to be. I understand the irony as you always told me to be myself, and I'm sure you would have loved me the same no matter how I turned out.
I've gone through some ups and downs throughout the last couple years, and you've been closer than ever during these times. I always ask myself, "What what Clarky do, or think?" Although you are physically gone, your presence has always and will always be with me.
Now, as I look back on the last four years, I realize that I never could have made it through them without you... more irony I know.
It's funny how I continue to learn from you although you are not physically here. I just wish we could have one more day, one hour, one more minute... but I'm sure many people wish that.
I love you Clark, and miss you very much. Thanks for staying with me. I feel you with me more than ever.
Until next time my brother,
Lee

Clark,
I cannot believe how much your loss impacted my life. There is not a day that goes by where I don't think of you. I looked up to you in every way imaginable and I still can't believe what happened. I find peace in the fact that I know someday I will get to see you again. I strive to live every day how you would have wanted, it was too soon. I cherish the time i had with you and the sacrifices you made for our country. I think about you every day, and it kills me that i can't pick up the phone and call you. I'm so sorry i couldn't have talked to you longer when you called me last, you were always the big brother i never had. Save me a spot up there, and keep an eye out, love you always and forever.

To Clark's Family,
I was fortunate to have met Clark at my nephew's wedding in Livonia, MI. Clark was a groomsman. The smile in his photo is exactly what greeted me when I met him! My nephew was another SEAL on a different team, but a close friend of Clark. I believe they met in BUDs training.
I saw the Home & Away project on CNN and wanted to search for Clark, and all the other SEALs who have selflessly served each other and all their fellow Americans.
It's a sobering exercise, but a necessary one.
As I fly the American flag this Memorial Day weekend, and head to Woods Memorial National Cemetery, I will think of and pray for Clark and his family.

Joseph,
Happy 30th Birthday in Heaven. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
Birthdays In Heaven
Are there birthdays in Heaven?
Does the angel blow his horn?
Announcing to everybody
That this is the day you were born?
Can the stars be your balloons
And angel food your cake?
Presents wrapped in moonbeams
All the angels helped to make.
Birthdays meant so much to you
They were always a big deal
Birthday presents, lots of friends
And perhaps a special meal.
So we'll whisper a little prayer today
Asking everyone up above
To sing you a Happy Birthday song
And give you all our love.

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

Joe,
I am sorry you lost your mom now too. She is with your son Clark and your dad.
Scott and I went to the 'Symphony on Ice' at the Hartford Civic Center last Sunday, and instead of a ticket we had to bring a 'toy for tots' which was organized by the U.S. Marine Core. When I saw all of those boys in their army fatigues in the doorway, I looked at their faces and tried to see somone, just maybe someone who knew Clark and I started sobbing and ended up crying through the whole performance. I was thinking about Clark and my other cousin Greg Blanton who was a Marine in Afghanistan. He told me if I saw what he had seen we would know why we are over there. When the war in Iraq started I wrote a poem and it was published in the Hartford Courant Newspaper. It was published on Thursday, March 27, 2003. I found it the other day in my writing desk. The newspaper has yellowed now and I remember I received a some hate mail after it was published. But I wrote it for a reason, and I am going to write it again here for Clark and all of those boys and men who die for us:
Ensuring Freedom
They bravely gag and fight the burning sand from blowing down their throats, that I might enjoy the freedom of opening my window in the morning to breathe fresh spring air. They blindly sort the friend from the enemy with heavy guns swinging and fear dripping down their backs, so that I may stroll freely and stretch my arms to wave at a passerby.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

To All Parents
“I’ll lend you for a little time a child of Mine,” He said.
“For you to love the While he lives and mourn for when he’s dead.
It may be six or seven years, or 22 or three,
But will you, till I call him back, take care of him for me?
He’ll bring his charms to gladden you, and shall his stay be brief.
You’ll have his lovely memories as solace and relief.
“I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return,
But there are some lessons taught down there I want this child to learn.
I’ve looked the wide world over in my search for teachers true
And from the throngs that crowd life’s lanes I have selected you.
Now will you give him all your love, nor think the labor vain,
Nor hate Me when I come to take him back again?”
For all the joy Thy child shall bring, the risk of grief we’ll run.
We’ll shelter him with tenderness, we’ll love him while we may
And for the happiness we’ve known forever grateful stay;
But shall the angels call for him much sooner than we’ve planned.
We’ll brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand.”

Dear Joe, Susie and Family,
It is with heavy heart that I write you during this hour of trial.
It is not right that war takes the flower of our youth.
It is not right that they die before having their children.
It is not right or fair that we outlive our children.
It is not right that our heroes aren’t recognized until after their deaths.
It is a blessing to die while living our dream.
It is a blessing to die while carrying our flag.
It is a blessing to die while protecting our comrades.
It is a blessing that our memory is forever young.
It is a blessing that we have a family advocate at St. Peter’s Gate.
It is not something we get over – this grief.
It is something we get through – this grief –
It is the gift of grace by our beloved that we will find peace.
It is through our serviceman’s sacrifice that our family is forever blessed.

Our hearts are heavy with the pain you, his family and dear friends, and his Team 4 colleagues, are now having to bear, and we hope beyond hope that his light will endure in all our souls.

I just finished reading all the other entries, honoring your son and cannot think of any words that have not already been used to console you. As the parents of a son the same age and same rank (Bm2) in the U.S. Navy, who also had aspirations of becoming a Navy Seal, but then changed his path in his service to our country, we just want you to know that your son's heroics will be remembered and we thank you for raising such a fine young man that would give his all to keep our nation free.
Although our "boys" did not know each other, I'm sure they met on the football field when Lake Linden-Hubbell and Crystal Falls played their games.
My husband also recalls meeting both your son and Joe over at Isle Royale, back when the boys were still in High School. So even though we don't know you personally, the path of our lives have crossed and we feel a gratitude to you and your son for the sacrifice you have made. May God bless you now, so that you can carry on his memories.

Not a day has gone by since receiving the news of the loss of your son Joseph C. that I don't pray several times a day for him and for all of your family. I ask the Lord to embrace all of you with his Loving Grace and give you strength at this difficult time. I think of Joseph everytime I see an American flag and I always will. Know that he is not forgotten nor are you in your time of sorrow.

To the Schwedler family,
We would like to extend our deepest sympathy to your family. When Clark was a member of the Physical Plant family here at Michigan State University, he brought many laughs and smiles in the short time he worked here. He will always be remembered by many.

Schwedlers,
I was saddened by the news today that you all lost Clark in Iraq. I always looked forward to spending summers with Clark in Port Austin growing up. Atheltic challenges, boating, etc, it always made time in Port Austin a little more special.
I am honored to have known him. His dedication to his country was remarkable.
You're in our thoughts and prayers.
Best,
Matt Pasant

I wish words took take away your pain, but they can't. I don't pretend to know how devestated you and your family are at the loss of your son. My son is also one of our country's finest. He is with the teams, and I know that he and your son talked, laughed, and probably raise a few toasts to the brave men they have had the privilege to know. My knowledge of just how amazing these young men are is what keeps me at peace. My son gave me a letter that was written by a fallen Navy Seal. Heath indicated that "This is how a team guy feels". I thought I would share it with you:
I consider myself blessed with the best things a man could ever hope for. My childhood is something I will always treasure. My family is the reason I'm the person I am today. They supported and cared for me in the best way possible.
The Navy, although I sacrificed personal freedom and many other things, I got just as much as I gave. My time with the teams was special. For all the times I was cold, wet, sore, scared, hungry and angry, I had a blast!
The bad was balanced with the good. All the times spent in the company of my teamates was when I felt the closest to the men I had the privilage to work with. I loved being a SEAL. If I died doing something for the Teams, then I died doing what made me happy. Very few people have the luxury of that.
So, as a mom of a SEAL, I know that my son is doing something that he loves. This is what keeps the calm in my prayers. I spoke With Judge Schawedler, yesterday, I could not stop the tears, and I am sure he had a difficult time understanding me. But know, I am proud of your son and all that he stood for. God Bless You.

It is with much sorrow that I send our sympathies to you and your family. Though I don't recall ever having a conversation with Clark Syrj had talked of him with the highest regards. As parents we should never have to experience the loss of a child. Know that your son was a hero defending our country and gave himself for our freedom. He will always be remembered in our hearts. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to your family. Paul, Connie, Joey and Sara LaChapelle

Dear Joe and Susie,
I am so sad and sorry that you lost your dear son. I remember your wedding so long ago, and how pretty you looked Susie. And family reunions when we all danced together as children and chased each other around. I remember a Kavanagh family reunion about 26 years ago and Scott and I came from Ireland. Our daughter Anne was a year old. I loved those family reunions!
Your sweet son is in heaven with all of his family
now. And he is at peace. I love you!
Your cousin,
Roby
