Joseph Shinko Obituary

Joseph Shinko, 63, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2016, in Ruther Glen, Va.

Joseph was born in Wilkes-Barre to the late Joseph and Shirley Everett Shinko. He attended Wilkes-Barre area schools and was a graduate of Meyers High School, Class of 1972.

After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a Military Police officer, where he was selected to guard President Nixon.

He was employed by Wilkes-Barre Logistics Services (WBLS) for many years until his retirement in 2008.

Joseph and wife of 42 years, Linda, moved to Virginia in the summer of 2015 to be closer to his son, Joseph Shinko Jr., and grandson, Matthew Shinko. In his spare time he enjoyed watching his grandson play sports, Notre Dame football, spending time with friends and family and coming back home to visit friends and family in Wilkes-Barre.

Surviving are his wife, Linda Welsh Shinko, Ruther Glen, Va.; son and grandson, Joseph Shinko Jr. and Matthew Shinko, Ruther Glen, Va.; brothers, Jeff, Ray and Paul; sisters, Teresa Konopki and Gina Henry; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Timothy Shinko.

Memorial services will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday at Desiderio Funeral Home, 436 S. Mountain Blvd., Mountain Top.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Maternity Cemetery, West Wyoming.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Desiderio Funeral Home, Mountain Top.

The family asks, instead of flowers, that friends make memorial donations to their local animal rescue or local hospice.
