Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 18, 2025.
Joseph M. Spivey, III was born August 10, 1935 in Richmond, VA and died August 17, 2025. He is survived by his lovely and talented wife Ann Dare of 67 years. He is also survived by his three sons Jake (Suzanne), Tim (Beth), Tom (Susanne), and eight grandchildren Peyton, Austin, Josh, Tori, Liza, Heather, Mary Moncure, and Thomas.

He is an alumnus of the Virginia Military Institute graduating in 1957 with a degree in civil engineering. He honorably served two and one-half years in the United States Army, field artillery and briefly worked as an engineer for Proctor and Gamble. He received his Juris Doctorate from the Washington & Lee University School of Law (1962), where he served as the Editor-in-Chief, Washington and Lee Law Review and was a member of the Order of the Coif.

Admitted to practice law in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia, he worked for Hunton, Williams, Gay, Powell, and Gibson, (now Hunton Andrews Kurth) from 1962-1993 and then served of counsel until 2001. He taught as an Adjunct Professor and Visiting Professor of Law at Washington and Lee University School of Law from 1997-2001. He was a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, a member of the American Bar Association, the Virginia Bar Association, and the Richmond Bar Association serving as its president in 1982-83.

He truly enjoyed backpacking with his wife and family hiking the Appalachian Trail, the Wind River Range, WY, Yosemite, CA, and British Columbia, Canada. He and Ann spent many enjoyable summers in Nova Scotia, and he frequently went pheasant hunting and fly fishing in Montana. They were able to visit every state and visited many countries in Europe, the Caribbean, Australia, and New Zealand. He enjoyed playing golf and reading particularly historical books about World War II. He was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. He and Ann greatly enjoyed spending time with his Brother Rats, John St. George (Betty), Joe Moody (Sue), and John Quillen (Judy).

He was a member of the Country Club of Virginia, the Commonwealth Club, the Bull and Bear Club, the Lexington Golf and Country Club and Lexington's Fortnightly Club. He and Ann were charter members of the Owners Club at the Homestead. He served as an active member in the Shenandoah Valley Civil War Roundtable, was a member of the Stonewall Jackson Foundation, served on the board of Southern Seminary University during its transition to Southern Virginia University, and was a member of George C. Marshall Foundation.

He was immensely devoted to VMI. He served on its Board of Visitors from 1983-1991; as president 1987-91. VMI honored his service with the Distinguished Service Award in 1994.

The family is grateful for the care he received from the nurses and staff of Regional Memorial Hospital, the staff of Suncrest Hospice, the wonderful caregivers of Visiting Angels - Wanda, Cailem, Jane, Amber, Verbalee. A private family service will be conducted. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10306 or, t2t.org.

At Joe Moody´s death, Joe Spivey said, "a finer friend there never was". If Joe could, he would say the same about his longtime friend and VMI roomie. Oh, the stories Spivey could tell! He was one of the finest storytellers. Of course, the four VMI roomies, Joe Spivey, John Quillen, Johnny St. George and Joe Moody always had great stories to tell on each other. My thoughts and sympathy to Ann and the family. I remember wonderful times together. Sue Moody

I am very grateful for conversations I had with Joe concerning his recollections of a trip he and Ann took in the footsteps of Lewis & Clark. His descriptions and enthusiasm of the details made one feel as if they were on the journey. Joe also spoke of his desire to know the contents of the pledge of loyalty to Britain that surviving Scottish warriors were required to take to be granted leniency after the battle of Culloden. I intend to continue searching for the contents of that pledge.
Our sympathies to the Spivey family and all the respect to Joe for a life well lived.
