Joseph Turcillo Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 17, 2022.
July 20, 1931 - October 17, 2022, Dr. Joseph (Joey) Turcillo Jr. passed peacefully in his sleep at 91 in Santa Monica, California. Joseph was born on July 20, 1931, to Joseph Turcillo and Rose Puleo. He was born and raised in New Jersey and was a proud graduate of Garfield High School, where he made lifelong friends. He received his BS from Fairleigh Dickinson University and studied biophysics at Saint Louis University. Joseph obtained his medical degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1959 and then moved to Los Angeles, California. He graduated from the University of California Irvine College of Medicine in 1962. In 1964 he meet Patricia Gates on her 21st birthday and within 2 months they married. They went on to have two daughters. Over more than six decades as a physician, Joseph earned many honors and achievements including being named chief of staff at Burbank Community Hospital and co-founding its cardiopulmonary lab; receiving the first-ever Humanitarian Award from the MEND clinic for his volunteer work to treat underprivileged patients and serving on the executive committee of the City of Hope's Board of Governors. He was also a member of the Medical Education Committee of Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, where he specialized in Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease. A resident of Malibu, Joseph was a long-time supporter of Pepperdine University. Dr. Turcillo was fiercely proud to be Italian American. If you were lucky, you might have caught a glimpse of him cruising down Pacific Coast Highway in his Porsche singing one of his favorite Frank Sinatra songs. He is fondly remembered by those that were touched by his enormous heart and generous spirit. Above all, Joseph was a thoughtful, giving, and fiercely loyal father and friend who did anything and everything possible for those he loved, including his extended family and beautiful cousins from New Jersey, Toronto, and Sicily. Joseph is survived by his devoted and loving daughter, Lisa Turcillo, beloved grandchildren Sophia, and Gabriel Stewart, former wife Patricia Turcillo, and daughter-in-law Jessica Ceron. He is also survived by his dear sister and brother-in-law Susan and Edward Mizrahi and niece Erin Mizrahi, his most faithful cousin, Annie Zoda, as well as his many cherished friends and family. A service is scheduled for Wednesday, November 9 at 12:30 PM at the Church of the Hills at Forest Lawn in Hollywood Hills. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations to the Trevor Project in memory of his daughter Susan Rose Turcillo.

To Joe´s Family:

Your obituary is marvelous & touching and I´m so sorry that I´m seeing this so late, but still wanted to leave a tribute which I hope you´ll see.

My Father Frank Buono from Garfield NJ was good friends with Joe at Garfield High & Fairleigh, Dickinson University. I was lucky enough to attend a dinner with Dad honoring Joe after he received the Garfield high school Hall of Fame award, and it was a very memorable evening with Joe at the head of our table. He even invited the Garfield high school cheerleaders to join us that evening!

Joe loved telling our family that my Dad helped him with bio & organic chemistry in school, which he said was key to achieving his goal of becoming a doctor. He was always so grateful & so much fun, visiting with us several times in Garfield over the years.

After my Dad passed in 2007, Joe would often kindly call my Mom to check in. We talked with him together about his great book, which we enjoyed, and he sent us photos of events he ran in Malibu like his jazz festival. Mom & I used to call him from Barcelona´s on Harrison Avenue in Garfield where he grew up to say hello.

Dad visited Joe in CA while he was there for business and enjoyed Joe taking him out for drives in his expensive sports cars.

Joe came to our house too over the years and always had such interesting stories to share, and he told the best jokes that always made my Parents laugh out loud. He was one in a million & will be missed. I hope & pray that they´re all laughing together in Heaven with Joe´s Mom who he loved telling us about & other precious family members. Deepest condolences,

Lora Buono & Family

My deepest condolences to the Turcillo family of on the passing of Dr. Joe Turcillo.

Lisa, I just became aware that you were in search of an Italian singer to pay tribute to the memory of your beloved father in song and perform at his memorial service. Please pardon me for not knowing this sooner.

If you would still like, I would be honored to pay homage to Joe, by singing his favorite Sinatra song, perhaps, some Pavarotti, Neapolitan or even the enigmatic 'Godfather' song (sung in its original Sicilian) at a different place or family gathering of your choosing.

With utmost respect, I humbly offer my singing at your service.

In Memoriam,

Joe Turcillo, Jr was a wonderfully giving and intelligent Human Being. Our City of Hope Board of Governors was blessed to have Joe as a Member for so many years. Joe will always live on in the progress his COH Board of Governors research investments have made and will keep making. My loving wishes for comfort and peace go to Joe's Spirit, and his family and other friends.
