Joseph Wagner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 22, 2022.
Retired Chicago Police Department legend, Joseph "Crazy Joe" Wagner, 76, moved in with his Heavenly Father, after passing away peacefully at home in Watertown, WI, after a valiant battle with heart disease and diabetes, on Thursday, August 4, 2022. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and someone who made the world a better, safer and more caring place for all.

Joe aka "Sonny" was born November 1, 1946 in Chicago, Illinois. Growing up, he enjoyed playing basketball & baseball, hot rods, dancing and roller skating (he was a beast). After high school, he joined the CPD and became the Chief Warrant Officer in the Englewood District. Like a scene from Grey's Anatomy, Joe, the dashing young police officer, met and became smitten with Bonnie, the beautiful and talented nurse, as their two worlds collided at St. Anthony's hospital. Joe & Bonnie married in 1969 and resided in the South Side of Chicago to work and raise their family. After 33 years on the force, Joe and Bonnie retired and moved to Wisconsin.

53 years of marriage later, Joe is survived by his wife Bonnie; his son Joe (Samantha) of Minooka, IL, along with their children, Joey and Abbey; and his daughter Julie (Andy) of Lisbon, WI along with their children, Kai and Kayley. Other survivors include his sister Barbara (Bill) and his beloved cat Arianna, and numerous friends and relatives.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Molly, and his brother, William.

Joe's career and life were both equally diverse and heroic. As someone who took pride in his oath to serve and protect, Joe worked in the housing projects, the transit authority, and private security as a body guard. He most enjoyed community policing/ "walking the beat," and working to ensure the safety of businesses and all citizens. He lived his life with sacrifice, bravery & valor. Joe literally would be the person to give you the shirt off his back. As a nature and pet lover, Joe also leaves behind a legacy of compassion for all God's creation.

Joe will be remembered for his character, courage and commitment to making the world a better and safer place in service of God. Please picture him sitting next to his Father in Heaven, with cats on their laps, a fishing rod in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other, feeding the ducks and filling the bird feeders, telling bad dad jokes, talking about "as seen on TV" or Shark Week.

Per Joe's wishes, he will be cremated with no services at this time.

The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Marquart Hospice for the care and compassion they provided to Joe and his family.

Joe, your badge shines bright. #10066. Rest in peace.
