Joseph Weiss, Jr Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 16, 2023.
Joseph Weiss, Jr. was born in Troy NY on July 27, 1952, and lived in Pittstown NY for most of his young life. He had a wish to someday live in New York City and find a career involving his love of music. For most of his adult life those wishes came true! He died in New York City on December 10, 2023.

Joseph is survived by five siblings. Brothers are Edward (Nina) Weiss, Tampa FL and Robert Weiss, Watervliet NY. Sisters are Nancy Newton, Gardiner ME, Barbara Richard, Lancaster OH, and Ann Weiss, Watervliet NY. Additionally he is survived by his aunt Michele Weiss (widow of James Weiss) and his uncle Edward of Troy NY area. He also has several nieces and nephews. Joseph's friends, too numerous to mention, have helped the family in many ways to enable us to get through this difficult time. We know they are all grieving with us and we are forever in their debt.

Joseph was predeceased by his father, Joseph Matthew Weiss, Sr. (1975) and mother, Betty Salladin Weiss Herrington (2015).

This obituary is submitted by his family, but Joseph belonged to Manhattan. No doubt he will be remembered not only for his kindness to others, his amazing memory but also his love of music of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. He graduated from Tamarac High School, Troy NY in 1970 and moved to Manhattan in 1973, satisfying part of his dream. In a relatively short time he achieved the rest, working with MPL Communications Music Licensing and followed up working independently representing both the Jule Styne and Frank Loesser heirs for many years. He loved his career, and even after Jo Sullivan Loesser's death he continued working with Jo's daughters, Emily and Susan who were very close to his heart.

Until COVID Joseph had not missed any of our annual family reunions at Candlelight Cottages, Lake George, NY. He loved those visits, loved that lake and loved taking the train rides upstate. He was definitely not an outdoorsman but the comradery with his siblings (and the Bloody Mary's) were very important in his life. He hadn't been able to attend for three years, but in September 2023 our brother, Ed, drove him up to Lake George from NYC and, gratefully, he was able to spend one more laugh-filled weekend with us.

Joseph's body has been donated to SUNY Downstate for research. We do not know his wishes but we do know that if you wish to donate, donations to either Parkinson's Disease or SUNY research would be greatly appreciated.

I always enjoyed very much our meetings at the Loesser office, Joseph, most of them with dear Jo. Thank you for your kindness and your intelligent advocacy of the work of Frank Loesser. He would have been grateful and proud, I´m sure. Rest in peace, Joseph.

Joseph and I initially connected through his work with the Styne catalogue and then on the Loesser catalogue. And I worked with him on many, many different projects over the years. I will miss him a great deal and am sending all clear and strong energy to his family. Sincerely, Mark Merriman

Joseph was a dear friend to his MPL colleagues during his many years at MPL and later on working side by side on the great songs of Jules Styne and Frank Loesser. He will be sorely missed by all. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

We would sit in your room and play show tunes on your record player. I knew then you belonged to the theatrical world. Rest in peace.

My interactions with Joseph were always friendly and pleasant, and he was a great and fierce advocate for the work of The Great Loesser-- Frank, that is. Frank was a lucky writer to have someone help manage that legacy in his stead, and we who encountered him were lucky to know his kindness and enthusiasm. Condolences to his loved ones.

A good friend and a fine musical theatre historian/archivist. So sorry to hear. You'll not be forgotten, Joseph.

I never met Joseph, but our mutual love of the great music of the theatre brought us together on Facebook. We had some business dealings when I licensed songs for my show Inventing Mary Martin (the Jule Styne Peter Pan songs) and he was a top pro in my eyes. We had the same great taste and cared deeply about musical theatre. Sad that we never had a drink together.

Joseph, it was always a pleasure working with you to promote the work of Frank Loesser and our conversations always brought me new knowledge and inspired me to learn more about the topics we discussed. Somehow, you would always know more than anyone else, and could recall the facts instantly. Rest in peace, my friend. Drew Cohen
