Joseph Zenga, Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 14, 2020.

Joseph N. Zenga, Jr., 85, of East Greenwich, passed away peacefully at home with his family on April 9, 2020.  He was the husband of Ursula (Junker) Zenga, married for 65 years.  He was the son of the late Joseph N. Zenga, Sr. and Irene (Kindle) Zenga and brother of the late Robert Zenga.

Joe attended LaSalle Academy, and Johnson & Wales University, followed by his military service where he was stationed in Berlin Germany during the Korean War, and served as a US Army Sergeant 1st Class, later becoming a member of the US Army Reserves.  He met his bride to be in Germany, where they were married in 1955 and had their first born, Joseph, III there, before returning to the states to join his father and brother in running Zenga’s Restaurant, (an icon in the town) for several years, while venturing out in the world as an entrepreneur.  It was the beginning of his legacy and his empire.

He ran for State Representative in the late 70’s and lost by only a few hundred votes due to his father’s passing near the end of the campaign.  Now Joe wanted to really step it up and take over Zenga’s landmark, with his brother for a few years, until he became sole owner.

He managed time on weekends to ride his motorcycles and loved his race cars.  He owned several cars over the years that were raced at Seekonk Speedway in Thompson, CT and Waterford, CT.  This was a great family adventure that was loved by all.  He also enjoyed eating out almost every night, accompanied with a really cold glass of beer and having friends around him.

Joe retired once when he was forty…only to find out that wasn’t the life for him.  He loved to work, and that he did, and never looked back.  Nothing was ever too much for Joe, he embraced a good challenge and could accomplish anything he set his mind to.  A life-long resident and a pillar in his community, he was known as the mayor of East Greenwich; the man about town and known throughout the state as well, through politics and many organizations.

Joe was the President of the Ambulance Assoc., and a member and of the Democratic Town Committee, where he had served as President.  He was a leader in the 1990 banking crisis, working with Governor Sundlun, Senators and Representatives, for over a year and a half, to achieve his plan of getting depositors their money back.  He served on the East Greenwich Zoning Board for 26years, the Historical District Commission for 5 years, had been President of the Big Brothers of RI, President of the German American Society in Pawtucket for 6 years, a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #19 for 30 years, a member of the former Itlo American Club, a member of Saint Bart’s Italian Club for 45 years and a member of the Police Chiefs Assoc. for 50 years.

Joe will surely be missed by many.  He touched so many people’s hearts.  He was a teacher and great mentor to many.  His keen mind and extreme and rare ability to analyze a problem or situation was amazing.  He was called a genius.  He had a memory like an elephant and his intelligence was beyond belief.  He always had a great story to tell.

We will miss his great friendship and extreme kindness.  He would drop anything to help a person in need.  Never a selfish bone in his body.  He had a great sense of humor, loved to tell a good joke, and would light up a room upon entering.  He was the life of the party, the man of the hour and highly respected and admired by all – Always.  He was a true gentleman who had a heart of gold.  Joe loved life and loved to work even more.  He was a humble self-made business man that believed no task was ever too big to tackle.  He was larger than life! He was a class act! He was a force to be reckoned with – Joe was a Rock Star!  He was “Cadillac”!

Joe Zenga was a great husband and father who truly loved his family.  It was an honor and a privilege to have him as a dad.

In addition to his wife Ursula, Joe is survived by his four children, Joseph Zenga, III of Florida, Christine Zenga of East Greenwich, David Zenga of East Greenwich and Stephen Zenga of Florida; a grandson, Nickolas Zenga of East Greenwich and sister Eileen and husband Dennis Kinney of Virginia Beach.

Due to current health and safety regulations his funeral will be private.  A Funeral Mass will be held at a St. Gregory the Great Church in Warwick, at a time to be announced.

Dear Ursula, Christine, and Family, I am still in shock over Joe's passing. He is ever a light and an inspiration to me, and I am certain all of you too. I have so many memories of Joe and just a few come quickly to mind: His singing to you Ursula in German at the German Club; his exquisite public speaking skills and his sense of humor as an orator; his running and leadership of his beloved restaurant; his numerous contributions to Big Brothers of Rhode Island (he did everything!); his friendship to me and countless others we all know, and of course his faith and eternal optimism....I always felt something was right in the world when I spoke to Joe. Indeed, I admired Joe immensely. The Zenga Family and the Burns Family go back many, many years in East Greenwich, and yet, with all the history and achievements, I recall this: Joe was my friend and no better friend could anyone have. Eternal rest grant to him, oh Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in eternal peace. Amen~ Ursula und Christine und Familie, immer wissen, dass Joe im Himmel für uns beten wird. Gott segne euch alle in dieser Zeit der Trauer. Wir werden dich vermissen, Joe. Bis wir uns wieder treffen. Liebe & Gebete, Bobby Burns

My earliest memory of Joseph Zenga Jr., or Uncle Joe Joe to me, was of him, my Uncle Bobby, and my Grandfather, Joseph Sr., working the kitchen at Zenga's Restaurant. As a little guy I'd occasionally glance into the kitchen to watch the three working in unison preparing the customers' meals. No matter how busy he was, he'd find a moment to wink and say, "What's up, Big Time?" Years later, while Uncle Joe and Aunt Ursula visited my family in Virginia Beach, he participated in a ride-along while I was a police officer. As anyone who knew my Uncle Joe would imagine, it was quite a memorable night. Uncle Joe possessed a sense of humor and a style of conversation that would instantly put a person at ease. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to know him. My thoughts and prayers are with my Aunt Ursula and my Cousins; Joey, Tina, David, and Stephen during this difficult time. Godspeed Uncle Joe Joe till we see each other again, Denny Jr.

Joe was a man of many talents who could not pass up an opportunity to talk to anyone. And we were all better for it. His generosity was without limit and only matched by his father, Joe Sr. He would give you the shirt off his back. He was a dedicated husband, parent, grandparent, uncle, friend and loving brother. He supported East Greenwich with fervor and insight always trying to make it a better place to live. Some of my family's fondest memories were our summer vacations to East Greenwich to be with family and friends and going out to dinner at such places as Tweet's in Bristol and Wright's Farm. Joe would always take charge and ensure that we would all have a great time and certainly not leave hungry. Joe had a zest for life, was full of generosity , concern for others and love for all. I was fortunate to have spent some special time with Joe, "big sister" Ursula, and the children before Joe's passing . We had time to reminisce, laugh out loud, and say our good byes. I will cherish that time forever.

Dad,
A million times I'll need you
A million times I'll cry
If love alone
Could have saved you
You would have never died
In my life, I have loved you dearly;
In death I love you still
In my heart I hold you
Which no one could ever fill.
It broke my heart to lose you,
But you didn't go alone
A big part of me went with you,
The day God took you home.

I will always be with you..Your legacy will
continue...I will always make you proud..
You were the greatest! I was so lucky to have you in my life for as long as I did, we were the best of friends, father and daughter, something, I will always take with me and cherish forever..I will always make you proud!
Your loving daughter Teen

I remember Joe as my landlord when I moved into the attic of his multi-unit house at 66 King Street in 1975, until I was burned out in an early-morning fire a year or so later. He was tough, but fair, and always seemed interested in the town's well-being. My condolences to his family.

Ursula,Tina, Joe, Steve, and David,
Where to begin? I will never forget you Uncle Joe you were always so kind to my family! My children adored you as you knew! My husband and I ate at Zenga's every week and you knew our favorites and would make them especially your lasagna and grape nut pudding! Whenever there was a death in the family you would put on the best meal ever and walk around and make everyone feel at home that was you Uncle Joe! The last time I spoke with you we had a great conversation and I told you how much we all loved you and to get better! The last thing you said was love you!
