Josephine Catapano

We mourn the loss of our cherished Jo who died on May 14, 2012. Born December 29, 1918, with roots in Brooklyn, NY, Jo graduated from Hunter High School and then Hunter College. Known by many as a "nose" and the first American woman perfumer of note, Jo designed Estee Lauder's Youth Dew and JHL, Guy Laroche's Fidji, Norell's Norell, and Shiseido's Zen, among others. Jo was a long time executive at International Flavors & Fragrances and her accolades include her 1980 Cosmetic Career Women's Award as well as her 1993 Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Perfumers. Her family remembers her as a devoted, spirited, loving, sister, aunt, and great aunt who enjoyed her life and lived it to the fullest. Jo was a caring and loving sister to brothers Patrick and John, who both predeceased her. She is mourned by many, including her sister, Carmella; her sister-in-law, Rosemarie; her nephews and nieces, Robert, William, Thomas, Lisa, Russell, Laura, and Gina; and the many great and great great nephews and nieces in her family, along with the millions that will be adorned by her creations for generations to come. Jo, you enriched our lives in countless ways, and will continue to do so with your sweet scents that charm and enchant so many. Your perfumes serve as a lasting legacy for the tremendous spirit that created them. Visiting Hours on Tuesday 2-4 & 7-9pm at Edwin L. Bennett Funeral Homes 824 Scarsdale Avenue Scarsdale, NY 10583 (914)725-1137. Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday 10:30am Immaculate Heart of Mary Church Scarsdale, NY.

I met Josephine many years ago in an Italian conversation class and was so impressed with her - and her modesty. One would never imagine she had such importance by her demeanor. She was so down to earth and friendly. She made such an impression that her name stayed in my mind all these years.
To her family, I offer my condolences. I don't have to tell you what a gem you lost. You already know that.
