Josephine Distel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 24, 2013.
Everyone loved Josephine. At 102 years old her spirit was so strong and bright people naturally gravitated to her. Her pure joy was contagious.
Born in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania on June 11, 1911, Josephine Distel was the daughter of Teofil & Rosalie Baranowski of Poland. She was the 5th of 11 children and is survived by her last living sibling, Francis Moore of Conshohocken, Pa. She is now at peace with her beloved siblings, Stanley, Bill, Sophie, Pauline, Bertha, Shirley, Stella, Agnes and Joseph.
A seamstress in her hometown, Josephine moved to New York City in 1950 where she resided until 2008 marking 58 years within New York City before moving to Auburn, Calif. She worked her way through the garment district to become a "top stitcher"-- one of the most demanding and sought-after jobs in the city. At 102 years old Josephine could still thread a needle without glasses.
Her family and friends will miss her blue eyes, her smile, and her fantastic detailed stories about her days of fun, joy and mischief in The Big Apple, the Atlantic City Boardwalk and other travels.
Auburn will be her final resting place. She loved the Sierra Nevada foothills for its trees, hummingbirds, mild snow and fresh air.
Her secret to such a wonderfully long life was a calm love, a love of walking and chocolate.
Josephine is survived by (son) William Carpenter Sr.,(grandchildren) Bill Carpenter Jr., Rob Carpenter and wife Jennifer, Elizabeth Bohn and husband Paul. (great-grandchildren), Heidi Bohn and Ella "Josephine" Carpenter "namesake".
A service will be held at Chapel of the Hills, 1331 Lincoln Way, Auburn, CA 95603 on Wed., October 30, 2013 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Auburn Salvation Army, 510 High Street Auburn, CA 530-823-3646. Please sign the guestbook at www.chapelofthehills-auburn.com

Deepest sympathy to Josephine's family. She touched many peoples lives. A special life has passed from sight. Embrace the memories that will comfort. Our Heavenly Father is Love and in His memory we are not forgotten. 1 John 4:8

Mom, I miss you so much. The house is a different place with out you. I'm so sad that I will not have the opportunity to take you to the snow and the Sierra's you loved so much. Mom, I had plans to do things you enjoyed this winter. I am sure you have a better view from where you are now, that is somewhat comforting. We will meet again in the afterlife. Love, Billy

What a great life she had. Please accept my condolences. I am sorry for your loss and that I did not know her personally. I feel fortunate to have been related to her and the other strong women in our family, including my grandmother, Agnes Kobus.

Jen, Rob, Bill Jr. and Bill Sr. Although I can't be with you while you remember Josephine (Grandma), you're in my thoughts from afar. I've only meant Josephine a few times, grandma was a feisty lady, always had a smile on her face. I love hearing her stories about N.Y and her years of growing up. I'll always remember the seafood dinners we had together, what fun that was. I know she is looking down from heaven wearing her ‘'Angel Wings''. Josephine was a special lady who will be dearly missed but never forgotten. R.I.P Grandma.
