Josephine Lucille Gray

On June 22, 2018, Josephine Lucille Hart Gray died peacefully in her sleep. Born in Seattle, Washington on July 12, 1918, Jo grew up in San Francisco, CA. She attended the University of California Berkeley and the University of Washington, studying to be a dietician. She also was an avid tennis player, playing doubles with her father, Arthur.
She met her future husband, Oscar (Ozzie) E. Gray, Jr., in San Francisco in 1943, who was serving as a Junior Officer on the Battleship Mississippi. They married on March 17, 1943, and Jo became the quintessential Navy wife, supporting her husband's career of over 30 years and raising a family. During this time, Jo and Ozzie had two children – Oscar (Ed) III (USNA '65) and Virginia - and Jo was very active in Navy Relief. After retiring from the Navy, Jo and Ozzie spent many years in McLean, VA.
Jo loved to play bridge, garden, embroider and listen to music. She was very independent and outgoing and enjoyed entertaining and conversation with friends.
In her later years, Jo was a resident of The Fairfax in Fort Belvoir, VA. While there, Jo enjoyed traveling, crossword puzzles, needlepoint and arranging flowers for The Fairfax's main dining room. She also attended weekly church services at The Fairfax and remained active in her favorite charities.

In addition to Ed and Virginia, Jo is survived by four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. A third great grandchild is expected in August.
