Joshua T. Byers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
Capt. Josh Byers, an Army Ranger and paratrooper, was a company commander in the 3rd Cavalry Regiment and was deployed to Iraq in April. Byers, 29, was killed July 23 when the convoy he was riding in hit an explosive device near the town of Ramadi, about 60 miles from Baghdad. A native of Anderson, S.C., Byers moved with his family to Sparks, Nev., in 1989, in time to start the second semester of his freshman year at Reed High School. Byers'' father, a minister, started a church in Sparks. The family moved back to South Carolina in 1995, when Josh Byers was at West Point. The death of the U.S. Military Academy graduate came on his mother''s birthday. When Josh Byers left for Iraq, he told his mother, Mary Byers, not to worry. "He kept saying, ''Mom, the worst will be over when I get there,''" she said. But she said she knew from his subsequent letters that her son was in danger. "He''d done a lot of night missions," she said. "Him being a Ranger, he got used to doing a lot of things." Mary and her husband, Lloyd Byers, are church missionaries in Guam. Reed counselor Bob White said that as a senior, Josh Byers was accepted at all three major military academies _ Army, Navy and Air Force. White said he chose West Point because he thought its rules of conduct were the strictest. "He said, ''Even though I want to go into the Navy, I''m going into the Army. Their honor code is better,''" White said. "He was the nicest, politest kid you''d ever want to meet."

joshua,

I remember this day with profound sorrow. Where you should be celebrating yet another birthday, your legacy as a Soldier, an American patriot, a brother and a son lives on even in your absence from our world.

I reminded by granddaughter, who shares the same birthday as you, of the sacrifice you, others before you and those yet unknown made and will make in defense of our beloved nation.

Joshua,

Today, like every memorial day past and future, the collective nation mourns your death and the deaths of others in the service to America. You epitomize all that is good about America and being an American Soldier.

Josh, thinking about you today. Deep Blue Something came on the radio, and I thought of you and and you singing along to it in the car. Kids asked why I turned up the oldies song in the car - I told them it reminded me of a friend. Love to you and miss you. Though I be the lone survivor...,

Joshua,

On this Memorial Day I'll think of you and the other brave souls who perished on distant battlefields defending all that is precious to America and those who call America home.

You're a wonderful young man, who even today, has a positive impact on those who served, currently serve or who will ultimately serve in the greatest Army of the greatest Nation on earth.

Bless you and your family on this solemn day of remembrance.

Joshua,

As is the case each Memorial Day, I think of you. So young and full of promise. How the world would be a better place if you were still with us, we'll never know. We do know it would be. Those of who knew you, or in my case knew of you are better for it.

May God be with you and your family.

Byers Family,

As 23 July approaches I'm reminded of two significant, life changing events occurring; the death of your son and the birth of my first grandchild. As a Nevada citizen his loss touches me. I've made numerous posts to this site and will continue to do so as long as God allows me the ability.

The tragedy of war can be summed up in the below quote from the ancient philosopher Sophocles:

"War loves to seek its victims in the young."

You son is missed by many. History will hopefully show his death was not in vain.

Deepest regard,

The Byers Family,

Another Memorial Day is upon us. I find myself once again thinking of Joshua and the sacrifice he made for a grateful Nation. His picture, along with 62 other fallen hero's with ties to Nevada, is displayed in each Nevada Army National Guard Armory. It is a small token of our organization's collective appreciation of him and other like him, who gave the only thing they could of themselves in the defense of our Freedom.

Joshua, where I've never met you, I think of you often.

Brigadier General Zachary Doser.

To the Byers Family,

This Memorial Day, I am giving a presentation at a Veteran's Cemetary. I plan on talking briefly about Joshua. We are all blessed for having known or know of Joshua and what a fine young man he truly is.

Mary, it was good talking with you the other day. I will keep Joshua's memory and memories of the other fallen hero's alive as long as God will keep me on this earth.

Thank you again for giving me permission to talk about you son during the upcoming Memorial Day event.

God sees all sparrows that fall. Life left you Joshua, before honor did.

August 12, 2014

I was recently at Fort Carson and had the honor of visiting the Memorial. I specifically searched for Capt. Byers' name as I had learned about him in an HBO special, 'Last Letters Home.' As a mother to two sons, and older sister to an Army Sgt. who deployed three times to Iraq, I can't begin to tell you how sorry I am for your loss. All I can say is that Capt. Byers now rests in God's Tender and Loving Arms. God Bless.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Josh Byers was a strong leader and a noble man. I will forever miss him.

August 5, 2007

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
