Joy Hirl

Joy Dorine Bonham Hirl passed away on December 22, 2024 after a short illness. She was surrounded by family and died peacefully in her sleep.



Joy was born on March 27, 1941 in Sebeka, Minnesota to Ruth and Robert Bonham. She was the second of two girls born that day, coming 15 minutes after her twin sister Janice.



The Bonham family moved from Sebeka to Corvallis, Oregon in 1953 where they set up a dairy farm. Joy spent parts of her days helping her father by milking cows.



In 1959, Joy met Philip Hirl and the two of them were married in 1960. They moved to Portland where they had two children. From there, they moved to John Day, Oregon where they had another child and then to Eugene, where they had their fourth child.



They moved to Redding, California and after five years there, they made their final move to Tigard, Oregon where they raised their four children.



Joy earned her master's degree in urban planning and began her career with HUD where she worked until retirement in after many years of service.



She was an avid golfer and the president of her Ladie's golf club in King City. She loved to travel and had many friends who will miss her.



Joy was preceded in death by her husband, Philip Hirl as well as her parents and five older siblings. She is survived by her four children - Robert Hirl, Kelleen Maniscalco, Corinne Rice, and Tracy Hirl. She is also survived by her five grandchildren - Sarah Chou, Aubrey Maniscalco, Savannah Rice, Sean Hirl and Liam Hirl as well as two great-grandchildren - Emberleigh Rice and Milo Chou. She is also survived by her twin sister, Janice Rhodes.



A celebration of life is being planned.
