Joyce Couture Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 3, 2017.
NORTH DUXBURY - Joyce V. Couture, 77, passed away at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin on Thursday morning, Dec. 29, 2016. Born in Burlington on Oct. 22, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Dwaine C. and Shirley M. (Keith) Marshall. On Dec. 20, 1997, Joyce married Douglas E. Couture in Pepperell, Massachusetts.
Joyce was a 1958 graduate of Waterbury High School and was a proud member of the state champion girls basketball team. She continued her education at the former Burdett College in Boston, receiving her associate degree in 1960. She then embarked on a four-decade career, starting as a bank teller and working her way up to head teller for the Waltham (Massachusetts) Savings Bank, Bay Bank in Littleton, Massachusetts, Bank of Boston and then Fleet Bank, from which she retired in 1999.
Athletically active throughout her life, Joyce loved the outdoors and particularly enjoyed hiking, cross-country skiing, camping and sea kayaking. An avid bicyclist, she and her husband logged over 12,000 miles touring Ireland, Scotland, the Canadian Rockies, New Zealand, the Oregon coast, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. Joyce will be deeply missed by her husband and family whom she loved spending time with, particularly the many family reunions and special occasions, as well as her feline best friends, Casey and Corby, with whom she could often be seen going for walks around the neighborhood, and her canine best friend, Bailey.
Joyce is survived by her husband of 19 years, Douglas E. Couture, of North Duxbury; her siblings, Phyllis Marshall, of Williston, Neil Marshall and his wife, Nona Brown, of Waterbury, Bruce Marshall and his wife, Polly, of East Montpelier, and Steven Marshall and his wife, Bonnie, of Waterbury Center; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family.
Friends may call at the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017, from 2 to 4 p.m. For those who wish, memorial gifts would be appreciated to the North Country Animal League (www.ncal.com); or to the Humane Society of Chittenden County (www.chittendenhumane.org). May it be some comfort that Joyce's classmates and friends are thinking of you, Phyllis, Doug and all the family, with deepest sympathy. We'll miss Joyce very much and we treasure the happy memory of the WHS Class of 1958 gathering at the Couture's for our mutual age 70 birthday party a few years ago. We will always remember her generous good spirit and drive.

Joyce was such a wonderful person, and great leader of so many of the Fitchburg Cycling Club adventures I fondly remember. I especially remember the cycling trip to Nantucket Island, staying in her familie's cabin on Camel's Hump mountain, and many other cycling, camping and hiking trips. I will always cherish her warmth, humor and sense of adventure.

Joyce will always be a shining star in my life. I valued her friendship and treasured the wealth of information she'd share with me and others in our 50+ Fitness Group. She was a great example for all of us of what people could strive to be. Set the bar high and keep working at it -- you'll get there one day -- just don't give up. She never gave up. I admired her and I will miss her greatly.

Dear Doug, Joyce has always been an inspiration as she embarked on adventures with such vigor. Working out with her a number of years ago at Global Fitness in Leominster is where I came to meet and admire her. I am so Sorry for Your Loss. I, for one, will remember her Always with that beautiful Smile.
Sincerely, Barbara Farnsworth

A complete shock and devastating for Doug, her family and friends. I knew Doug and Joyce when we were all members of the Fitchburg Cycling Club, many years ago. Remember many wonderful times together and will remember her wonderful smile and sense of adventure. May she Rest In Peace and her memory live on. So very sorry for your loss.
