Joyce EVANS Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix from Jun. 2 to Jun. 15, 2017.
Joyce Sydney Evans
July 2, 1937 – May 29, 2017
Joyce Sydney Evans was born in Port-of- Spain, Trinidad, West Indies July 2, 1937. Joyce passed away peacefully on Monday, May 29, 2017 at Royal University Hospital with her friends at her side. Left to mourn are all her special friends. Joyce was the only child of George Garnet and May Rice McCarthy (both deceased). She grew up in Trinidad, losing her father at the age of two; she was raised by her mother May. Her mother took in laundry, sold eggs and chickens to the local markets in order to make a living. You can now appreciate why she was so frugal and saved everything. Joyce was educated in Trinidad. She became a stenographer working in a bank part-time in order to make money. She immigrated to England at the age of 21 or 22 with the help of her god-father. Her dream was to become a registered nurse and she trained at New Cross Hospital in London. Following her nurses training she completed a Mid-Wifery Course, Joyce and Guy met during their training days and were married October 31, 1964. They both worked in hospitals in London, England for 16 years and then made the decision to move to Canada to have a better future. Their first stop was Brandon, MB, then Winnipeg, MB, from there they moved to Saskatoon in the late seventy's. Their first home was an apartment and in 1985 purchased their Condo on Main Street, where Joyce lived until her passing. They loved their home and enjoyed entertaining their many friends. Joyce was hired as a Nursery Nurse at St. Paul's Hospital from 1979 to 1995. She transferred to RUH and worked in the Nursery until her retirement in 1999. She was a conscientious and dedicated nurse and loved caring for her moms and babies. Joyce's first love was Guy, she missed him so much after his passing in 1998. Her second love was travelling. Joyce was a seasoned world-wide traveller. She especially enjoyed the times her and Guy and her special friends spent in the Caribbean. Her third love was her many special friends. She enjoyed entertaining, treating them to gourmet meals on many occasions. She also enjoyed spending time with them on vacations. At Joyce's request there will be a Private Memorial Service and a Private Burial. In lieu of flowers Memorial donations can be made to Emmanuel Anglican Church 607 Dufferin Avenue, Saskatoon, SK S7N 1C4, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan, or to a charity of your choice. I worked with Joyce in the nursery at St. Paul's hospital. She was a delight to work with...her laughter brightened my day and her dedication to the moms and babies on the ward was a daily reminder of what excellence in nursing is. RIP my friend.

Joyce was my son's nurse in 1994 when he was born. Such a sweet angel and I know she will be missed by many moms.
Perhaps this Angel set my son's love for travelling to T and T in a very special way when she cared for him while we were in the hospital for so long.
Heaven has gained a very special Angel.

What a beautiful person! I had the privilege of meeting Joyce when we were both working evening shifts at SPH. On more than on occasion I saw Joyce waiting for the bus at the end of her shift and one day offered her a ride. From then on we travelled home together when we both worked. I was blessed to have the opportunity to get to know her on those lovely drives home. She took an interest in my life and we genuinely enjoyed each other's company. Her lovely spirit and infectious giggle will be greatly missed. My condolences go out to all of Joyce's special friends.
