Gladys Virginia Corbett Mowery, died on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at Rex Hospital after a short illness. She was 91.
Gladys was born July 16, 1916 in Selma, NC. She was one of nine children born to Charles A. Corbett and Birmah Broadwell Corbett of Selma, both deceased.
Gladys moved to Washington, DC in her teens after the death of her mother and lived with her older sister Ethel where she graduated from Central High School and from Southeastern Business School in Washington DC.
She was first married to Ewing S. "Ray" Morgan, head auditor to the U.S. Maritime Commission. They lived in Panama City, FL, Dallas and St. Louis before returning to Washington DC where he died of a heart attack.
Following his death, Gladys worked as the manager of the Mayfair Store in Washington DC for a number of years where she met and married Kay Mowery. Their life centered on following his career in IBM to many parts of the country. They both shared a love of duplicate bridge where Gladys became a ACBL Life Master in 1976 and a Bronze Master in 2004. The game of bridge provided her with innumerable friends across the United States.
She and Kay lived for many years in Washington DC, Illinois, Connecticut and Texas before finally relocating to the Raleigh area. They resided in Cary for 20 years and moved to Magnolia Glen in Raleigh in 2004.
She is predeceased by her four brothers, Dr. Clarence Corbett of Dunn, Albert A. Corbett of Smithfield, Julius Corbett of Kenly and Talmage Corbett of Selma and three sisters, Breattie Corbett O'Neal of Louisburg, Ethel B. Scarborough of Selma and Elsie Corbett Adams of Selma.
She is survived by husband, Kay Mowery of Raleigh; her sister, Myrtle Corbett King of Louisburg; godchild, Theda Stemler Blackwood of Long Valley, NJ and a large contingent of cherished nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2008 at Oakwood Cemetery in Louisburg. A remembrance for Gladys will be scheduled at a later date at Magnolia Glen Retirement Community in Raleigh.
The family will receive friends at all times at the home of Myrtle King, 615 N. Main St. Louisburg, NC.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to a favorite charity.

Kay,
I was so sorry to learn of Gladys' passing. You and she were such good friends to my Mother, Lucile Hooker. My thoughts and prayers are with you. All of you at Magnolia Glen have had so much sadness lately.

Dick and I are so sorry - and shocked- to hear of Galdys' sudden death. We will always remember how pretty she looked at the CPSA convention in Bethesda last year. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and family.
