Joyce HESLEP Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal from Mar. 30 to Mar. 31, 2018.

HESLEP, Joyce Mae (Chaney)
October 16, 1930 - March 27, 2018
With sadness and joy, in equal measure, we celebrate the life of our mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Joyce was born in Edmonton, eldest child of John and Sophronia (Jones) Chaney. Her early years were lived in both Alberta and British Columbia. Upon graduation from commercial high school, Joyce was employed by the Government of Canada as a secretary. Her career progressed, with growing levels of responsibility, at University of Alberta, NAIT and Queen Elizabeth High School. Both as a pioneering young career woman and, later, as a working mother, Joyce excelled in her various roles, winning the appreciation and confidence of her employers and colleagues.
In 1948, Joyce met Scotty Heslep, an ambitious young veteran of World War II. They were wed in 1951 and, over the following years, built a strong and closely-knit family, as Joyce gave birth to daughters Cathryn and Carol, and son, Cameron. As a homemaker, mother and hostess, no cake ever went unbaked.
Joyce and Scotty had a deep and enduring faith in their Lord and Saviour. They were strong contributors of their time and service at Central Pentecostal Tabernacle and, later, West Edmonton Christian Assembly. Joyce was particularly active in children's Sunday School, teaching, developing programs and directing the preparation of young Christians.
Joyce loved life and became well-known for her joyful interactions with everyone she encountered, whether lifelong friend or total stranger. She also delighted in a vibrant personal style, with particular emphasis on footwear fashion. Joyce's positive outlook and Scotty's unshakeable devotion sustained her through an amazing recovery from a devastating stroke, in 2001. Her character and personal courage is a continuing inspiration to all.
Joyce was predeceased by her daughter Carol (Roland Majeau) in 2006; her brother, Ken Chaney, in 2014, and her beloved husband, Scotty, in 2016. She is survived by her daughter, Cathryn (Doug McLaughlin); her son, Cameron (Suzanne); her grandsons, Conrad Murphy, Jordan Majeau (Tammy), Justin Majeau (Ladonna) and Marc Majeau; her granddaughter, Kelsey Heslep-Yakemchuk (Matt); by her great-grandsons, Martin Majeau, Henry Majeau, Timothy Majeau; by her sisters, Joan Lafayette and Lenora Murphy; her sister-in-law, Helen Heslep, and by her brother, Larry Chaney (Marilyn) and many, many more relatives and dear friends.
Finally, the family gives thanks to some very special, caring people – the staff of Unit 5B, at the Edmonton General Hospital, who gave Joyce their time, their skills and their hearts. Folks, you are the best.
Joyce's Funeral Service will be held at West Edmonton Christian Assembly, 6315 199 Street on Tuesday, April 3, 2018. Commemoration will commence with viewing at 11:15 a.m. and service at 12:00 noon, with cake and coffee to follow.

My parents, Glen & Isabel Harris spoke of the Hesleps and not only did some of our family members attended Q.E.H.S., I worked at Nait in the General Office when Joyce was there and found her to be a helpful co-worker and such a lovely person. My condolences to the family, may she rest in peace.

To the Heslep family - your parents were some of the finest people we knew when we were attending Central. What a blessing it was to have known them! There was no kinder, more gracious or genteel couple. Scotty and Joyce were always a welcome sight and, one day, when we are called home, it will be a joy to embrace them once again!

With the Lord's blessings,
Frances and Murray Ballas

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
