LALLY, Joyce Doreen
August 28, 1925 - January 27, 2013
With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Joyce Doreen Lally on January 27, 2013 at the age of 87 years. Joyce was born in Wainwright, Alberta, the only child of Conrad Tollendal Lally and Mary Beryl Lally. She grew up in Wainwright, leaving in 1941 to attend Rupert's Land Girls' School in Winnipeg. From there, she went to the University of Manitoba to study home economics, graduating in 1947 with a B.Sc. in Home Economics, then on to Vancouver where she spent a year at the Vancouver General Hospital interning as a student dietitian. Joyce worked for several years as a dietitian in British Columbia, Edmonton and Montreal. She then embarked on a different career, acting as secretary to the Chairman of the Montreal Forum, home of the Montreal Canadiens. Later, she returned to hospital dietetics, first in Montreal and then travelling back west to work at the Calgary General Hospital from 1978 until her retirement in 1987. Joyce had many interests, including bridge, hockey, travelling (to Europe, Africa and throughout Canada), square dancing and the Skrastins Outdoor Club (for cross- country skiing in winter and hiking in summer). Volunteering was an important part of her life, for Calgary Meals on Wheels, UNICEF, the Kerby Centre, 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics and as a pastoral care giver. All along, she made many friends. Joyce enjoyed very much her years spent and friends made at Fountains of Mission Retirement Residence. Joyce will be remembered and greatly missed by her first cousins Mary (Robin) Phillips of Calgary and Brian R. King of Winnipeg and their families, as well as by the family of her late first cousin Dr. John (Jack) King. The family wishes to thank Chinook Care Centre, Foster's Way Unit, for all their kindness and care of Joyce during her time there. Heartfelt thanks also to Daisy Oriel who was such a compassionate caregiver to Joyce. A Memorial Service will be held at The Anglican Parish of St. Mark and St. Philip, 1802 – 33 Avenue S.W., Calgary, at 1:00 p.m. today February 4, 2013.
