Juan M. Zapata, 88, passed away at his residence on December 9, 2011 to join those waiting for him in his heavenly home.
A Rosary will be held on Monday, December 12, 2011 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Fr. David Herrera officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
Juan was born on March 7, 1923 in Ozona, Texas. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, just some four and a half months earlier. He leaves behind on daughter, Gertrude Zapata; one son Gilbert Zapata and wife Aracelia; grandchildren Gabriel Zapata and wife Jennifer, Joseph Zapata, James Madrid and wife Kim, Maxine Breedlove and husband Ken; ten great-grandchildren and various nieces and nephews.
Juan entered the Army Air Corps on September 7, 1942. He later served in the Air Force. Then he served in the Army National Guard for over 25 years, from which he retired. He was a Recovered Alcoholic and spent the rest of his life helping others stay sober. He also helped bring the Alcoholic and Drug Rehab Center to San Angelo. He was a very giving man, and a man of his word. He left a substantial foot print in the lives of his family and friends, and will be dearly missed by all.

Twenty-five plus years ago I decided to quit drinking and checked myself into the detox center in San Angelo. A man by the name of Marcos Holguin introduced me to AA Grupo Nueva Vida where I met Juan and others from the group. Thanks to Juan and them I am still sober. You could say he helped save my life.
Gracias Juan.
