Jubilant Schuh Obituary

Published by The Press-Enterprise on Jan. 6, 2017.
JUBILANT JOY KATHERINE SCHUH, of Riverside, CA, went home to be with her Lord and her parents on Christmas Eve, 2016. Her life will be celebrated January 7, 2017 at First United Methodist Church of Riverside, 4845 Brockton Avenue beginning at 12:30 p.m. with a viewing followed by a service at 1 p.m. and a reception at 2 p.m. Burial will be at the Riverside National Cemetery, Friday, January 13th at 10 a.m. Joy's life involved many passions and commitments of dedicated giving, whether with her time, talents, or rolled up sleeves, ready to take the lead in helping others. She graduated from Moreno Valley High School in 1975 as class valedictorian. She continued her lifelong love of learning at UC Riverside, earning a teaching credential and a master's degree. Joy was an exemplary second-grade teacher at Alcott Elementary School, emphasizing science, math, and the Arts. Her many musical programs involved and engaged the entire school. Early in her 30-year career she earned Teacher of the Year Award at Alcott and her teaching style and dedication positively impacted hundreds of children. Music was a particularly important part of Joy's life from the Madrigals at MVHS to ultimately being a founding member of Raincross Master Chorale. Her strong, vibrant soprano voice often graced programs with solo and collaborative work and she made every concert she sang more beautiful and meaningful because of it. Joy was a lifelong preeminent collector of Garfield the Cat memorabilia, known throughout this worldwide community and personally to the Jim Davis Family. Her dedication to that orange kitty played a very important role in her life. Joy was also a collector of Hallmark Christmas ornaments often going to conventions and artist signings. She was a charter member of the Inland Empire Ornament SWAG and also heavily participated in the Ornamenteers of San Dimas. Joy is survived by her beloved companion and husband Jess Long; her older brother Robert Schuh and her sisters-by-choice Julia Ree (with husband Bob) and Claire Lacson. She also leaves behind three godchildren, Chris, James, and Paula and hundreds of friends, all of whom she considered dear and vital to her life. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jubilant Joy Schuh may be made to any of the following worthy causes: Alcott Elementary School Library (Phone: (951) 788-7451); Mary S. Roberts Pet Adoption Center, Riverside, California (http://www.petsadoption.com); or Raincross Master Chorale Scholarship Fund (http://www.raincrossmasterchorale.org/patrons) Joy loved to laugh and shop and help and give. The world has been blessed with an angel whose life was too intense to remain. We love you Joy and will miss you forever.

I'm not sure who will remember me; but I was a friend of Joys' St Moreno Valley High. My name is Mary Killen-Wockenfuss. Joy, Julie Ree, Wendy Copeland-Dixon and Denise (for the life of me I cannot remember her last name), were the best of friends in the 9th and 10th grade. I'm sending my condolences and love to the family and friends of Joy.

Joy was a wonderful friend and collector. My husband and I knew her very well as Garfield Cat collectors. She will be missed by all who knew her, especially by all involved with the Garfield collector connections.

Her death distresses me deeply. She was too young and too talented in many areas of interests. I hope she is in a better place, as she deserves the best treatment and lots of love.

Hi, I wanted to pay my respects to a special lady...
My daughters and I experienced your 2013-2014 class. It is hard to make this short. You have changed our lives forever, for the better. I was one of the room mom's of this magical year that I shared with two other fortunate people.
It was the school year of our children coming home smelling of vinegar volcanos and Bill Nye the Science Guy becoming a household name. All our children gained a positive name and became Dr's. You loved each one of your students dearly, you made sure you told them daily because you were not sure if they heard it at home.
Every morning you said a quote before leading your class to the classroom. " The true test of a man's character is what he does when no one is watching." Your student's chanted it after you.. During these past difficult days, I looked up this quote and learned it was a quote from John Wooden. Of course, Alcott Elementary implements John Wooden's Pyramid Of Success! I can not thank you enough for being a confidence builder in our children's lives as well as all the people who were fortunate to know you. "A coach's primary function should be not to make better players but to make better people."_ John Wooden
Jubilant Joy, you have made us all better people.
Forever in our hearts,
Mrs. Beautiful Bonngard

Our hearts are filled with JOY because of JUBILENT JOY! A few years ago at one of our Garfield conventions she came up to me and said, "From now on your name is "JOYFUL JERRI!" I am forever grateful for having met this wonderful and zany lady, and will always love my name as "JOYFUL JERRI"! We will miss you JUBILENT JOY, BUT YOU WILL LIVE IN OUR HEARTS FOREVER!

Joy, we met through the Garfield Gathering. You made it fun, entertaining & zaney. Your quick wit and banter was thoroughly enjoyed and will definitely be missed. You embraced life and judged no one. Until next time.

Jubilant Joy was a unique individual with a HUGE heart for kids. She was my son's 2nd grade teacher. I still have the photo album she made of his year in her class. She did this for every student, every year! What a treasure it still is when I look back at it every year at Christmas time. She was a fantastic lady. May she rest in peace knowing what an impact she has had on so many.

Jubilant Joy Schuh was my 2nd grade teacher, and a large part of the reason I became a teacher. You could easily see the love and passion that she had for teaching and her students. She inspired a lot of my teaching practices, I try to make learning as fun for my students as Jubilant Joy did for me! She will be greatly greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.

My deepest condolences go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring you comfort. Knowing that there is a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.

Miss Schuh was both of my children's second grade teacher. They loved her to death, and would go back to see her when they were older. We parents also adored her-we could see that she cherished our children. She made learning fun, incorporated music and art throughout all lessons, and trusted her beloved Garfield to overnight sleepovers. We all wanted to be her Room Mothers and Fathers. So sad for the kids that will never get to experience that.

Miss Schuh was my second grade teacher, my Brother Will's teacher two years before, and may as well have been my twin Sister Danielle's teacher too. She was, for a good long time, almost an extended member of the family, even sharing a Sam's Club membership with my Mom, Kim, for years after the three of us kids had left her classroom. She left a lasting impact on all us kids. Even recently, a rummage through some very old boxes led to the rediscovery of class journals from Will's year with Miss Schuh in which 7 year old Will, when asked in his assignment to reflect upon his day, chose instead to write about how much he loved Miss Schuh and how he was so thankful to have her as his teacher. Truly heart melting.

I have many memories from my 2nd grade year (1998-1999) and the years that followed that I will cherish the rest of my life. I will share a few that I think exemplify what Miss Schuh meant to me. 18 years ago today, I was excited to be back to school after what any 7 year old would have described as a magical holiday break. We had ended our first trimester on a high note, with a holiday musical performance. My best buddy at the time Joseph, had played one of the lead roles; a little boy who would be getting nothing for Christmas because he had been Noth'n but bad. How could I not be excited for what was to come, after all, how were we going to top that? Easy, this was Miss Schuh's class afterall. In Miss Schuh's, class you could never really predict what exciting adventure you would be embarking on next. Like an episode of The Magic School Bus our Miss Schuzzle (a play on the series character Miss Frizzle) was our guide in the world of Serious Play. I would learn firsthand what it felt like to Take chances, make mistakes, and get messy! That year, from an animal adoring, beetle bug chasing child, a scientist was born. In me would be kindled a love of science that would not only endure, but thrive within me even to today, as a 25 year old, working towards a Master of Biotechnology far from home, in the Aggieland of Texas A&M. Successful science is Serious Play, a childlike fascination with the world around you. It is a skill I learned and cherished from the wonderfully wacky Jubilant Joy Schuh!

With Love,

-Marvelous Miranda George

She was my second grade teacher and I am now in my 30's. Despite this large time between then and now, my amazing memories of her are crystal clear. She was, without a doubt, one of the best teachers that I have ever had. Finding out that you were going to be in her class felt like winning the lottery! You knew that you were going to get a fun nickname, you would get to take care of Garfield (for the weekend if you were lucky enough!), and that you were going to have one of the best years ever.
We all loved you, Ms. Schuh. And we always will.❤

Jubilant Joy was my friend. When I came to Alcott in 1999, she welcomed me with her Schusical tour of the campus and with her zany, witty banter. When we worked after the students left, I could hear Jubilant Joy's angelic singing voice echoing off the buildings. I will miss her. I will think of her often. I pray for her to be at peace and to be happy forever more. She called me Vivacious Vickie.
