Judith Laviolette Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 11 to May 12, 2011.
LAVIOLETTE, Judith Ann Surrounded by her adoring family, the kind and ever-gentle Judy Laviolette passed away on Saturday, May 7, 2011, in the Hematology Unit of the University Hospital. Judy will be forever loved and deeply missed by her children, Colleen (David Holzer) and John Albert (Tracy Boehm); father, Jim (Maybelle McArthur); siblings, Sandra (Glenn Woolsey), Mary-Jane (Kerry Anderson), and Jim (Sherry Taylor); nieces and nephews, Jenny (Bruce McKnight), Matthew (Natasha Milicevic), and Taylor Woolsey, Craig, Lisa, and Marc Laviolette; and five grandchildren, Liam and Danielle Albert, Matthew, Hannah, and Josh Holzer. Judy was predeceased by her mother, Margaret in 2000. Born in Edmonton, to the loving Margaret (nee Murphy) and James Laviolette, Judy was the eldest of four children. Judy shared a beautiful childhood with Sandra, Mary-Jane (Kitty), and Jim Jr., which included many summers at Alberta Beach and camping trips to the mountains. An introspective child, Judy was a warm and fiercely loyal sister and daughter. Judy's greatest loves were her children, Colleen (Holzer) and John Albert. A supportive mother and friend to both, Judy took great pride in their every accomplishment. She also shared in the families Colleen and John created with David Holzer and Tracy Boehm. Judy treasured her grandchildren, Matthew, Hannah, Josh, Liam and Danielle, who in recent years, brought her endless joy and laughter. As a devoted grandmother, Judy loved to celebrate her grandchildren's stories and successes. She cherished their time together at the lake, craft time and all-chocolate sleepovers. Jenny, Matthew, and Taylor Woolsey, and Craig, Lisa and Marc Laviolette adored Judy as a selfless and sincere aunt. Judy valued and nurtured their individual interests and opinions, never missing an opportunity to be involved in their lives. During the many hours they spent together, Judy shared her wisdom, humor and patience. Judy took great pleasure in the simple things in life. She loved her family, with which she enjoyed many dinners, holidays, vacations, movies and conversations. She generously gave her time and support to family and served as a mentor and inspiration to many. A great conversationalist, Judy always engaged family and friends in her meaningful and thoughtful dialogue. Judy continually saw the humor in all situations and brought much laughter to those around her. Always adventurous and open-minded, Judy travelled extensively with her sisters and family throughout Europe, Southeast Asia and Canada. Especially after traveling to Italy, Judy appreciated good food and experimenting in the kitchen. Many of these meals were coupled with fine wine, which she particularly enjoyed with her dear friend and brother-in-law, Glenn. An avid reader, Judy had a passion for literature and the power of language, which she shared with her daughter, Colleen and niece, Jenny. Judy will be forever missed and fondly remembered as a devoted and sensitive mother, daughter, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend.O Our sincere thanks to Dr. Larratt, Dr. Van Zanten, Dr. Zhu, Dr. Modi, Dr. Mitchell and the nursing staff at University Hospital Unit 5F4. Her life will be celebrated with a private ceremony. For those wishing, memorial donations can be directed to support the Judy Laviolette Fund, c\o the University Hospital Foundation, 8440 - 112 Street N.W., Edmonton, AB T6G 2B7. It has been very difficult to hear of Judy's passing. I had the pleasure of working with Judy for a while at SRD, she often shared pictures of her grandchildren and stories of their adventures - she was so proud of them.

I am so sorry that I did not know she was ill, thus, I never got a chance to see her before she passed. My thoughts and prayers are with the family especially Mr. Jim Laviolette who is my neighbor. Judy was so shocked that I was her parents' neighbors’ for 24 years.

You were an awesome person Judy, may God keep you safe always.

Being a part of the neighbourhood where Judy and her siblings grew up, we have many fond and happy memories of all the Laviolette Family. Times shared with Judy over the years will be deeply cherished, especially the last neighbourhood get-togethers the fall of 2009 and summer of 2010. The passing of Judy's radiant and loving spirit now leaves a deep sadness in the lives of those who knew her. Colleen, John and all of the Laviolette Family you are in our thoughts and prayers at this time of sorrow.

This Saint Catherine's alumnus [1953-1959] remembers grammar school friends. Judy was "in our pack". We were just kids; running throughout our neighbourhood, playing 'kick-the-can', and occasionally teasing Principal Ms. Redmond. From a fun-filled childhood, it does not surprise me that Judy grew to be a special mother, aunt, and grandmother. My family left Edmonton in 1959, yet the memories of JUDY, Linda, Wayne, Rennie, Ronnie and Ricky have lasted a lifetime. Yes, another may have taught me how to play "Spin-The-Bottle"; however, as a child of 12 and from a distance, it was Judy who I had a crush on.

Judy and I were friends through grade school and on into High School. She was a maid of honor at my wedding. I moved away and as our families grew we didn't have the time to stay in touch other than Christmas. Recently, while in Edmonton I was blessed to spend some time with Judy. She hadn't change one bit. She was still the kind, thoughtful, fun-loving person she was when we were growing up. I pray your fond memories will give you peace. It's said that "the love of a family is life's greatest blessing". Judy was blessed many times over.
Jim, Tanner, Kitty, Jimmy, Colleen and John know you are in my thoughts and prayers. If I can do anything please let me know.
Fondly,
